World Cup Qualifier: Croatia edge Ukraine 1-0

Fiorentina striker Nikola Kalinic scored his second goal in the 2018 football World Cup qualifying campaign to help Croatia beat Ukraine 1-0, and give the hosts their fourth victory in five matches in front of a sellout crowd at Maksimir Stadium.

For two years, since beating Norway 5-1 at the same Maksimir Stadium, the Croatian national team waited for a chance to play an official home game in front of their supporters.

World Cup Qualifiers: Spain and Italy register important wins

Spain and Italy eased past their opponents to stay unbeaten in Group G of the 2018 football World Cup European qualifiers, with Italian veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon playing the 1,000th game of his career.

Spain have extended their unbeaten streak in World Cup qualifiers to 58 matches with a 4-1 home victory over Israel, as David Silva, Vitolo, Diego Costa and Isco all found the net, while Thiago Alcantara and Silva himself saw the ball hit the woodwork. Lior Refaelov scored a consolation goal for the visitors in the 76th minute.

USA thrash Honduras 6-0 in World Cup Qualifier

The U.S. Men's National Team used a hat trick from Clint Dempsey as well as goals from Sebastian Lletget, Michael Bradley and Christian Pulisic to earn an emphatic 6-0 Final Round World Cup Qualifying win against Honduras at Avaya Stadium. The victory gives the U.S. its first three points of the Hexagonal and pushes the team into fourth place, just one point behind Tuesday's opponents Panama for CONCACAF's third and final automatic World Cup berth.

The U.S. was clinical in front of goal all night, converting six of the eight shots it put on target. That finishing touch told from the outset as it took the U.S. just five minutes to gain a lead when Lletget tallied his first international goal by finishing Pulisic's deflected shot at the back post. The U.S. doubled the advantage through Bradley in the 27th minute, before Pulisic slipped Dempsey in on goal to score his first in the 32nd, sending the MNT into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.

World Cup Qualifiers: Messi's penalty gives Argentina tense victory over Chile

Ace forward Lionel Messi helped Argentina beat Chile 1-0 in an intense football match of the South American qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, putting the Albiceleste in the direct qualification zone. Messi scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 16th minute on Thursday.

The Argentine squad managed to kill two birds with one stone; first, they exacted revenge against Chile after La Roja defeated them in the last two Copa America finals. Secondly, Argentina climbed to third place with 22 points, one less than Uruguay and eight behind Brazil, putting the Albiceleste in the direct qualification zone for the World Cup.

World Cup Qualifiers: Late penalty sees Syria stun Uzbekistan 1-0

A penalty successfully converted by Omar Kharbin in the dying minutes of the game gave Syria a vital 1-0 win over Uzbekistan that the war-torn country's team needed to keep alive its hopes of advancing towards the 2018 football World Cup finals in Russia.

Kharbin's spot-kick, taken in the first minute of the second half's injury time, beat veteran Uzbek goalkeeper Aleksandr Lobanov and raised a cheer among 23 million Syrians still in the war-ravaged nation on Thursday.

World Cup Qualifiers: James Rodriguez scores late to give Colombia 1-0 win over Bolivia

A late strike from James Rodriguez handed Colombia a barely deserved 1-0 victory over Bolivia in their 2018 football World Cup South American zone qualifier here.

The hosts dominated possession in the stifling heat at the Metropolitano stadium but were mostly unable to create danger on Thursday.

Brazil thrash Uruguay 4-1 as Paulinho nets hat-trick in World Cup Qualifier

Guangzhou Evergrande midfielder Paulinho bagged a hat-trick as Brazil edged closer to qualifying for next year's football World Cup with a 4-1 victory over Uruguay. Barcelona forward Neymar also netted for the five-time World Cup winners while Edinson Cavani was on the scoresheet for the hosts on Thursday.

It was Brazil's seventh straight win under coach Tite, who remains unbeaten since taking over from Dunga after the team's group-stage elimination from last year's Copa America.
