LPGA Tour rookie Sydnee Michaels and Mika Miyazato share the lead at 7-under-par after the first round of the Safeway Classic. Ashleigh Simon goes two shots clear at ISPS Handa Ladies British Masters

South African Ashleigh Simon hit a six under par 66 at Buckinghamshire Golf Club on Friday to take a two stroke lead going into the final round of the ISPS Handa Ladies British Masters. The Johannesburg 23 year old began the day three behind the overnight co-leaders, but birdied the third and then picked up seven shots in six holes from the fifth, with five birdies followed by an eagle at the 10th. That put her at eight under for the day and 11 under overall, but she then dropped two shots on holes 12 and 13.

Another eagle chance at the 14th fell just short and the resultant birdie was countered by a three-putt bogey at the last, but it was enough to open up a two stroke lead at nine under par.

Stacy Lewis continues pursuit of Yani Tseng's world no.1 ranking at Safeway Classic

The 41st annual Safeway Classic kicks off Friday on the Ghost Creek Course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. Rolex Rankings No. 6 Suzann Pettersen looks to defend her title as she competes among a dominant field consisting of 20 of the world's top-25 golfers. Nearly all of this season's winners are in the field this week including No. 1 Yani Tseng, No. 2 Stacy Lewis, No. 4 Na Yeon Choi, No. 12 So Yeon Ryu and No. 17 Angela Stanford. Among the others in the field this week are former Safeway Classic champions Ai Miyazato, Mi Jung Hur and Cristie Kerr.

For Stacy Lewis, it still hasn't set in that she is the second-greatest golfer in the world and the top-American on the LPGA Tour. She admits she checks the rankings every now and then to make sure she hasn't been dreaming for the past several weeks. But on the course she is reminded of her success this season as players study from afar to gain some insight on what it takes to be at the top.
