Arsenal midfielder Denilson to extend loan at Sao Paulo for another year

Arsenal's 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder Denilson has extended his loan stay in Brazil with Sao Paulo. The club revealed on their website that a deal had been agreed to keep the player for another year, till 2013. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was supposedly looking for a permanent suitor, with Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere coming back from injury, and Alexandre Song already establishing himself as one of the most important cogs in the Arsenal machinery. However, the Tricolor have landed a deal where they will pay Denilson's wages, with Arsenal having an option to terminate the loan if they receive a permanent transfer offer.

Sao Paulo head coach Emerson Leao shared with the club's official website, "Denilson has much quality and last season he performed well here. Arsenal, rightly, would not initially release the player. Fortunately we had high-level talks in England with the board and everything was settled for the extension of the player's deal. I am sure he will continue to be a benefit to the team."

Sporting Lisbon sign on Indian Captain Sunil Chhetri

User Rating: / 1

Legendary Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon today declared their decision to sign India's Football captain Sunil Chhetri for a minimum period of a season in an attempt to improve sporting and footballing relations between the two countries.

With Portugal ranked 5th in the latest FIFA rankings, and India a lowly 165th, the gulf in the ability of players in both countries is enormous, and Chhetri was under no illusions that he would break into the first team set-up at the club right away, but declared in a press conference in Delhi today his willingness to battle hard and use the opportunity to train at one of the best clubs in the world to improve his ability and skill as a footballer.

Free agent Danny Guthrie joins Reading

Reading Football Club announced today that Danny Guthrie has agreed to join the club on a Bosman from Newcastle United. Central midfielder Guthrie, 25, who came through the ranks at Liverpool and Manchester United before making his mark at Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle, has agreed a three-year contract at Madejski Stadium.

He completed his medical today and the deal will go through on 1st July, subject to the normal ratification of the contractual documents by The FA and Premier League.

Barcelona sign Manchester United target Jordi Alba for 14 million Euros

FC Barcelona have signed left-back Jordi Alba from Valencia for a fee of 14 million Euros. A product of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, Alba joined Valencia in 2005, and has gradually made the left back spot his own.

He has been an integral part of the Valencia side that has achieved third place in La Liga for the past three seasons. The 23-year-old is new boss Tito Vilanova's first signing, and will play in Eric Abidal's position after the latter retired last season after ongoing health issues. It is after a long time that Barcelona have decided to bolster their defence, with Javier Mascherano being forced to play in the centre of defence due to lack of cover.

European biggie Barcelona in for Manchester United target Mats Hummels

Reports coming out of Spain have suggested that La Liga giants Barcelona are set to make a move for German defender Mats Hummels, who is also on Manchester United's radar. The centre-back has been impressive in his outings for German champions Borussia Dortmund, helping them to successfully defend their Bundesliga title last season.

His solid showings for the German national team in the European championships have further enhanced his reputation as a quality defender. Still only 23, Hummels would be a great addition to any top European team and comparisons of the 23 year old with German legend Franz Beckenbauer have already surfaced.

Olivier Giroud expresses delight at Arsenal move

French international Olivier Giroud told the Sun in an interview that he was excited at the prospect of joining Arsenal this summer. Following France's quarter-final loss to Spain, the Montpellier striker is currently in the process of putting pen to paper on the much awaited transfer.

The 25 year-old displayed exceptional class last season scoring 21 goals to lead Montpellier to the Ligue 1 title. His exceptional performances had culminated in the player being called up to the national side for the 2012 European Championships. With star striker Robin van Persie's future still up in the air, the Frenchman could well lead the line as Arsene Wenger looks to end a seven-year trophy drought at the club.

Red Devils earmark Willems as possible future signing

Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Netherlands fullback Jetro Willems, this after the 18-year old proved to be one of the few positives in an otherwise disastrous Euro 2012 campaign for Bert van Marwijk's Dutch side. Netherlands, one of the pre-tournament favourites for the European Championships, exited the competition after the group stages, losing each of their three games against Denmark, Germany and Portugal.

Willems however was one of the side's brighter performers, starting each of those three games and providing good support both in offence and defence.
