Super Rugby Round 8 Review: Sharks and Cheetahs march on

The Sharks and Toyota Cheetahs were the big winners this weekend as the Southern Kings averted defeat in their first ever tour match in Australia against the team that topped the Vodacom Super Rugby standings.

It was a weekend of high drama in Canberra, Durban and Bloemfontein, where the only South African team that didn’t avoid defeat was the DHL Stormers, who went down to the Toyota Cheetahs in a typically tough derby.

Springbok Sevens crowned Tokyo champions

South Africa won the Tokyo Sevens on Sunday morning when they beat New Zealand 24-19 in the Cup final of round seven of the HSBC Sevens World Series. It was a repeat of the USA final, which South Africa also won in February. The result moves the Springbok Sevens rugby team onto 100 World Series points and up to second spot on the log, 32 behind New Zealand and two ahead of Fiji.

The Springbok Sevens and Fiji are now the only teams to have won two tournaments so far this season.

Australian Men's Sevens finish third in Tokyo

The Australian Men’s Sevens have defeated France 31-7 to finish third at the Tokyo Sevens today. The result boosted the Australians significantly in the HSBC Sevens World Series standings, moving them from 11th up three places to eighth, with two rounds left in the season.

The Australians started day two of the tournament with a significant win over Fiji, 21-12, in the Cup quarter-final, before a 35-17 loss to New Zealand in the semi-final sent them to the third-place playoff against France.

Super Rugby Round 7 Review: Toyota Cheetahs fly South African flag

The Toyota Cheetahs were the only South African Vodacom Super Rugby team to walk away with a win this weekend after they scored a brilliant victory over the Melbourne Rebels in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The men from Central South Africa have now won their last four matches and looked thoroughly impressive against the Rebels, whom they beat by 34-16, scoring five tries in the process. However, the Southern Kings, Vodacom Bulls and DHL Stormers were all beaten on a rather bleak Saturday from a South African perspective.

Australia to face Fiji in Tokyo Sevens Quarterfinals

The Australian Men’s Sevens will meet Fiji in the Cup quarter-final stage of the Tokyo Sevens, after finishing second in their pool today.

Playing at Prince Chichibu Memorial Ground in the seventh round of the HSBC Sevens World Series, the Australians started pool play in fine form with wins over England, 26-19, and Argentina, 31-0, before a deciding match against Samoa, which they lost 26-14.
