Shakib & Razzak: Back in the groove

abdur_razzak.jpgGoing by performance and consistency alone Shakib Al Hasan and Abdur Razzak would be the top names for Bangladesh in international cricket. However, both had felt a need to prove something to their own selves when the Grameenphone Cup series against Zimbabwe got underway.

Shakib has been a dominating presence as an allrounder in world cricket in both Test and one-dayers during the last year and a half but hadn't played any cricket of note for two months prior to the Zimbabwe games as he nursed a nagging groin injury. Razzak had recovered from a hamstring strain that had kept him out a bit longer than Shakib but could not train with the team until the last moment as he had been preoccupied with a family emergency

India beat Australia by 99 runs in the second one-day international thanks to an excellent innings of 124 from skipper MS Dhoni, who shared in two century stands with Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina to enable the home side to post a massive 354 batting first. Australia failed to put up much of a fight in the chase as a good opening spell by Praveen Kumar was followed up by another useful contribution by Ravindra Jadeja enabling India to level the seven match series at one apiece.

Australia won the toss at the absolutely stunning Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur and raised a few eyebrows by opting to field first. Australia had the two forced chances to injury with Brett Lee and James Hopes missing out a

Australia took a 1-0 lead in their seven match one-day series with India by recording a close 4 run victory over India at Vadodara. Four Australian batsmen including skipper Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey notched up half centuries, to guide the visitors to a competitive 292/8 in their 50 overs. The target proved too much for the Indian batting line-up as a well thought-out assault plan for every batsmen from the Aussies, coupled with a useful bowling effort from their entire unit left India reeling at 201/7 in the 40th over. However a late flourish from Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar brought India ridiculously close to pulling off a very unlikely win.

Australia won the toss and elected

India has a chance to regain the number-one position in the ICC ODI Championship for the third time in as many months when it takes on Australia in the seven-match ODI series which begins in Vadodara on Sunday.

Second-placed India had surged to the top of the ladder after defeating New Zealand in its opening match in the tri-series in Colombo on 11 August and then again following South Africa's loss to Sri Lanka in the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 opener at Centurion on 22 September. However, time spent at the top has been short for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side as it slipped back into second position after losing to Sri Lanka at Colombo on 12 August and then to Pakistan at Centurion on

New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Mills has claimed the number-one position for the first time in his career in the ICC ODI Player Rankings for bowlers at the end of the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 which was retained by Australia at Centurion on Monday.

Mills, who started the elite eight-team tournament in number-two position trailing Sri Lanka's Nuwan Kulasekara by seven points, now leads his Sri Lanka counterpart by 10 points. They are the only two bowlers in the 700-point mark, which in ranking terms marks out a player as truly great.

Mills has been in the top 10 since December 2007 and finished as the third leading wicket-taker in the tournament with nine wickets to play a leading role in New Zealand's progress
