Athletes of the world officially invited to Sochi 2014

At a ceremony today marking one year to go until the start of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge officially invited the world's National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and their athletes to take part in the Games.

During the event, President Rogge personally delivered invitations to representatives of the NOCs from the host countries of the previous, next and future editions of the Olympic Winter Games (Canada, Russia and South Korea, respectively), in addition to the NOC of the host country of the next Summer Olympic Games (Brazil). All other invitations will be sent by post from the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Transfer of knowledge from London to Rio complete

The International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s Debriefing of the London 2012 Games wrapped up today in Rio de Janeiro, bringing a close to a week-long transfer of knowledge between organisers of the Games of the XXX Olympiad and future host cities.

Representatives from the IOC and the London 2012 Organising Committee shared their best practices and experiences from this summer's Games with over 500 participants from Sochi 2014, Rio 2016, PyeongChang 2018, and the 2020 Candidate Cities: Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid.

Young Olympic heroes leading contenders for 2013 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award

A group of brilliant young teenagers from the London Olympic Games are among the leading contenders for Nomination for the 2013 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award.

Gymnast Gabby Douglas, 400 metres runner Kirani James and swimmers Katie Ledecky, Ruta Meilutyte and Ye Shiwen all won gold medals in London and showed potential for amazing futures.

Also in the mix for Nomination could be Britain's Andy Murray, aged 25, who won the Olympic singles tennis gold medal and mixed doubles silver and also his first ever Grand Slam at the US Open. And New Zealand's phenomenal Lydia Ko, the youngest ever winner of a professional golf event at the age of 14 years 280 days.

IOC strips Uzbek wrestler of London bronze, Hungarian Gabor Hatos named new medalist

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that it has disqualified Uzbek wrestler Soslan Tigiev from the men's 74kg freestyle wrestling event during the Games of the XXX Olympiad in London, where he placed third.

Immediately after his participation in the event on 10 August, Tigiev, 29, provided a urine sample that tested positive for the prohibited substance methylhexaneamine.

Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games taking shape with big winter season ahead

The eighth visit of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission to Sochi concluded today with Commission Chairman Jean-Claude Killy praising the local organisers of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games for the notable progress they have made in preparations, just weeks before the start of a key test season.

During its three-day visit from 9-11 October, the Commission paid visits to a number of the future Olympic venues, including the sliding centre, ski jump facility, cross country/biathlon area and the coastal cluster. The Commission was pleased to note that most of the venues are either nearing completion or are already in use.
