Davydenko sets sights on Dubai title

nikolay_davydenko2.jpgThe talented Russian, acknowledged to be one of the swiftest players on the ATP World Tour, has changed his normal playing schedule so that he can prepare in the best possible way for his bid to lift the trophy at what is universally acknowledged to be the premier tennis event in the Middle East.

"Before, I've always played Rotterdam and then come straight to Dubai," he said. "But this time I have one week off and have time to prepare outdoors in the hope that I have sufficient time to reach a good level."

Davydenko missed the tournament last year because of injury, but on his last visit in 2008 he beat Andy Murray in the quarter-finals before losing a tough three-setter to Feliciano Lopez. When the Russian recovered from injury last season, he captured five ATP World Tour titles in a season for the second time in his career, climaxing with his biggest career title at the year-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London when he defeated US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro.

ATP Tour Monday Wrap: Soderling wins in Rotterdam, Berdych in San Jose

Three tournaments on the ATP Tour kicked off this Monday with the star attraction undoubtedly being the €1,150,000 ABM AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam. Swede Robin Soderling, the no.3 seed, stole the limelight on day 1 with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 come from behind victory over Frenchman Florent Serra. Joining Soderling in the second round was 5th seed Spaniard Tommy Robredo and Italian journeyman Andreas Seppi.

Top seed Novak Djokovic opens his campaign tomorrow against Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine while 2nd seed Nikolay Davydenko has a tough first round encounter on Wednesday with last weekend's SA Tennis Open champion Feliciano Lopez.

WTA Tour Monday Wrap: Vesnina advances in Paris, Lisicki in Pattaya

A couple of tournaments kicked-off on the WTA Tour on Monday as the top ladies headed to Paris to participate in the $700,000 OPEN GDF SUEZ event, while the biggest Asian stars headed to lovely Pattaya City in Thailand for the $220,000 PTT PATTAYA OPEN.

elena_vesnina_1.jpgJust a couple of main draw matches took place in Paris with 8th seed Elena Vesnina coasting into the second round with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania. Joining Vesnina in round 2 was Hungarian Agnes Szavay who was up a set against Olga Govortsova before the young Belarusian retired due to a viral.

Williams and Djokovic return to defend Dubai titles

Reigning champions Venus Williams and Novak Djokovic are looking forward to the challenge they will face when they return to Dubai this month to defend their titles at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.

Sunday Tennis Wrap: Lopez, Cilic, Belluci pick up Titles

SA Tennis Open, Johannesburg

Third seed Feliciano Lopez ended his 5-year wait to return to the winners circle at the SA Tennis Open in Johannesburg on Sunday. The 28-year old Spaniard, overcame some tough resistance from Frenchman Stephane Robert in the opening set, before rattling off 7 games in a row to take control of the contest.

feliciano_lopez.jpgRobert, ranked an even 100 in the ATP Tour rankings, is playing the best tennis of his life at the prime young age of 29. Competing in his first ever ATP final, the Frenchman showed no signs of nerves as he hung in under severe examination from the left-handed Lopez to stay on serve in the opening set. Robert's luck ran out in the final game of the first set as Lopez broke him a 5-6 to take a 1-0 lead.
