Kimi Räikkönen led the charge for Lotus F1 Team in the Malaysian Grand Prix; translating a tenth place starting slot into a fifth-placed finish in a rain-affected, red flag-interrupted race. He also set the fastest lap of the day as the track dried in the run to the chequered flag. It was a different story for Romain Grosjean, with an early exit from the slippery Sepang circuit on lap four.

Both cars started on the green marked intermediate tyres. Kimi made three stops with an intermediate, wet, intermediate, hard tyre strategy. Kimi set a succession of fastest laps on the hard tyres as the track dried, culminating with a 1min 40.722secs on lap 53. It was the 36th Grand Prix fastest lap of his career.

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg finished the rain-affected Malaysian Grand Prix in 10th and 13th places respectively today. Starting from third, Michael's car was touched on the first lap leading to a spin which dropped him to 16th at the end of lap one. The rain falling prior to the race increased in intensity from lap four and led to a red flag on lap nine and a 51 minute delay.

After the restart, both Michael and Nico struggled to get the best from their tyres and were not really able to fight for point winning positions. Michael was a fortunate beneficiary of a late retirement from Pastor Maldonado, which allowed him to climb into 10th place.

Bruno Senna scored the team's first points of the season by finishing sixth in the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday. His Williams teammate Pastor Maldonado was also on target for a top ten finish until an engine issue ended his race on the penultimate lap of the Grand Prix.

After beginning under safety car conditions, the race was red flagged on lap nine for just under an hour due to heavy rain. Following a first lap incident, Bruno made an unscheduled pitstop for a new front wing. Pastor had to make an additional pitstop after poor visibility caused him to miss his pit box when attempting to pit for wet tyres on lap 14.

alonso_wins_malFernando Alonso against all odds came up trumps in an action packed Malaysian Grand Prix in a joyous finish for Ferrari. In a race that saw a bit of everything, a wet start, a red flag and a 45 minute break, a restart and finally a drying finish Alonso took his chances, put the pedal to the metal when he could and stayed out of trouble when others lost their bearings to pick up a fabulous win. In a surprise second place was Sergio Perez for Sauber. The Mexican drove a superb race through the difficult wet period and challenged Alonso right to the end to pick up a fine second place in the best drive of his young career. Hamilton for the second week running started on pole only to pick up the final podium position.

Mark Webber finished in fourth ahead of an encouraging fifth place for Kimi Raikkonen. Bruno Senna drove a magnificent race from the back of the field to finish in 6th place ahead of Force India’s Paul di Resta in 7th. Force India were the only team to have both drivers in the points as Hulkenberg finished in 9th ahead of a satisfied first points scoring GP for Vergne. Michael Schumacher had a difficult race after yesterday’s qualifying success and only picked up the lone championship point for his troubles.

The front row for tomorrow’s fourteenth running of the Malaysian Grand Prix is an all-McLaren affair with Lewis Hamilton again on pole in 1.36.219 with Jenson Button (1.36.368) alongside him. Third is Michael Schumacher (1.36.391) in the Mercedes. Fernando Alonso will start from the fourth row, having set the ninth fastest time in 1.37.566, although he is promoted to eighth because fifth placed Kimi Raikkonen (1.36.461) gets a penalty in the Lotus. In the other Ferrari, Felipe Massa went out at the end of Q2 and will start from 12th place, with a time of 1.37.731.

Stefano Domenicali: "We should regard this result as a glass half full. We know that we are in difficulty in this early part of the season, therefore we have to look at limiting the damage on track, while working to make the F2012 more competitive in as short a time as possible. All of us and our fans would like to see our drivers always in the fight for pole position, but if we do not have the potential to do so, then we have to do the best we can."

After an exciting qualifying session at the Sepang International Circuit this afternoon, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg qualified in third and eighth places for tomorrow's PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix.

Michael and Nico moved easily through Q1 in first and third positions using just one set of prime tyres each. Their first laps in Q2 were compromised by a yellow flag, forcing the pair to go out again on a second set of options. Michael posted the third fastest time in Q3, whilst Nico lost time on his quick lap with a flat-spotted tyre in turn one. Today's performance saw Michael qualify in the top three for the first time since the 2006 Japanese Grand Prix.

Building upon his encouraging form from Friday practice sessions, Indian F1 driver Narain Karthikeyan has managed to put the HRT F112 on the grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix, round two of the FIA Formula 1 championship. Although the team has been through a steep learning curve since the season-opener in Australia last weekend, it has made significant strides in areas of performance and reliability with the Indian driver continuing to accumulate crucial miles on the car in the final free practice session before afternoon's qualifying.

"The team worked until late last night to resolve the cooling issues especially along with other small niggles and the result was apparent in the morning. Even though the grip was lower than yesterday (due to the morning rain shower), the car felt significantly better."
