McLaren ace Monza qualifying to lock out front row, Hamilton on pole

Lewis Hamilton turned out a stunning lap to grab pole position at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza this afternoon, as Jenson Button made it a 1-2 for McLaren Mercedes with his final timed lap of Q3. The McLarens were lent a helping hand by the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso suffering a rear roll-bar problem, the scarlet cars being their closest competitors all weekend.

Hamilton, who set the fastest laps in the latter two free practice sessions, was on the money from the outset, finishing second fastest in the first session. He followed that slower tour to make 4th on the board in Q2, and in the final session put up a glorious lap on his first run, a 1:24.010 time which was not bettered by anybody including himself.

Sebastian Vettel cut his losses with a strong fifth place, while Mark Webber failed to make it into Q3 by six hundredths of a second.

In a car that was 10mph slower than the top runners in the speed trap, Vettel was 7th in the first session. An improved lap only garnered a 9th spot in Q2, but ensured safe passage to the final session where a slower lap (1:24.802) put him sixth on the board, the fastest Renault powered car on the grid. A penalty to Paul di Resta ahead of him for a gear box change moves the world champion up to 5th. The German will be encouraged about his prospects by the Red Bull’s better race pace in comparison to qualifying.
