There might have been less than 5 hundredths of a second separating them, but it was a morale boosting result for Red Bull Racing and Sebastian Vettel in particular as the reigning double world champion marked a much welcome return to form by finishing at the top of the time sheets in Free Practice 1 at the Singapore Grand Prix. A red hot Lewis Hamilton was second quickest, while his McLaren Mercedes teammate Jenson Button was third. Button's times though were not very inspiring, as he was almost a second off the pace set by the two leaders.
World Championship leader Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest in FP1 while Pastor Maldonado, despite his off-track excursions set the 5th fastest time of the afternoon. Mark Webber in the other Red Bull car was 6th quickest, and the Australian will also look to get his championship hopes back on track this weekend after a run of poor results.

Lewis Hamilton sealed a fantastic victory at the Italian Grand Prix at the royal park in Monza this afternoon to cap a perfect weekend, having started on pole alongside teammate Jenson Button. The other McLaren had a less memorable day as Button retired from second with a fuel pump issue. Sergio Perez produced the drive of the day, perfectly executing an alternate one-stop strategy starting the race on hard tyres to outwit the majority of the field in a climb from 12th to second for a third career podium. Fernando Alonso had a feisty drive to extend his championship lead, finishing third ahead of teammate Felipe Massa. It was a disaster of a race for Red Bull Racing as both cars suffered retirement, a first non-scoring weekend for 23 races.
