Tottenham Hotspur 2010-11 Season Preview

jermain_defoe.jpgTottenham Hotspur recorded one of their best performances last season which rightfully landed them a place in the UEFA Champions League. The fight to earn the right to compete with the best in Europe went on till the very end with rivals Manchester City breathing down their necks. Spurs clawed their way up the table defeating Big Guns Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea along the way. They won their home fixture as well as the crucial away fixture to Man City thus ending up fourth in the Premier League table at the end of the season.

Manager Harry Redknapp who guided Portsmouth to FA Cup glory has given the white half of North London a chance to dream after years of anguish marvelling at the success of their red neighbours. His shrewd tactics and the ability to bring out the best in his players have made him one of the most respected managers in Spurs history. However, this season assures Redknapp and his men a lot of hard work if they are to match up to the expectations of their eager supporters.

Having had below-par seasons in 2009/10 by their respective standards, Liverpool and Arsenal begin their 2010/11 campaigns with what should be a cracker of a contest at Anfield come Sunday, the 15th of August. Arsenal were going well last season till about April when they lost their way both in the Premier League and in Europe to end in an all too familiar third spot behind Chelsea and Manchester United in the league and with no silverware to show for all their efforts.

Liverpool meanwhile, had a forgettable campaign finishing seventh in the league, the first time since 2004/05 that they have finished outside the top four. Uninspiring leadership from Rafael Benitez and the owners falling out of favour at Anfield didn't help matters as Liverpool finished below Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

This weekend marks the beginning of the 2010-11 Premiership season as champions Chelsea kick off their title defence against West Bromwich Albion. Chelsea couldn't have hoped for an easier start to the campaign. Last season Chelsea reclaimed the title after a 3 year absence and also went on to collect the FA Cup to complete the club's first Double. Carlo Ancelotti's team scored a record 103 goals en route to the title.

West Brom continue to fulfill their tag as a "Yo-Yo" team. The Baggies have been relegated from the Premiership thrice in the last eight years. They finished 2nd last season in the Championship behind Newcastle. Roberto Di Matteo, who spent six years at Chelsea(1996-02), won't be looking forward to his return to Stamford Bridge with great confidence. Di Matteo has done a good job after taking over from Tony Mowbray last June. The Baggies had a steady season comfortably clinching promotion with a few games in hand.

Subject to a medical, Tiago Manuel Dias Correia better known as 'Bébé' will join Manchester United from Vitoria de Guimaraes today on a transfer fee that is said to be around £7 million. The 20-year old was recommended to the club by Sir Alex Ferguson's ex-assistant manager, Carlos Queiroz.

Bébé was born in Agualva-Cacém, Portugal where he is said to have spent part of his childhood on the streets and later looked-after at an orphanage. He started out his career at Estrela da Amadora, a Portuguese second division club and was later bought in January by Vitória de Guimarães on a 5-year contract.

steven_gerrard_2.jpgThe 2009 - 2010 Barclays Premier Season can be only described as ‘torrid', ‘harrowing' and most importantly ‘hugely disappointing' for the most successful team in England. Not only did the Kop witness Liverpool's ousting from every cup competition at a considerably early stage, the fans were compelled to watch Rafa Benitez (who had taken the team to European glory in his first season) lead the team to an unacceptable 7th place in the Barclays Premier League, barely getting into Europe grabbing the final UEFA Europa League spot. The Spaniard got the axe in the summer and promptly made his move days later to European Champions Inter Milan while leaving Liverpool in a situation of dire straits. American owners George Gillet and Tom Hicks, who have been looking to sell the club for ages, poached Roy Hodgson from Fulham to save a club, once graced by the likes of Bob Paisley, Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish.

The Reds saw themselves kicked out of the UEFA Champions League in the group stages last season while losing out in the final four of the inaugural season of the Europa League. They were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship side Reading while crumbling to a junior Arsenal side in the Carling Cup 5th round. Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard were forced to carry the mantle yet again and the two were rarely fit and playing together during the course of the season. With a new coach, 2 World Cup winners amidst their ranks and a few strong summer signing the Reds are certain to banish the ghosts of the recent past and it'll be interesting to see how far they go in this ‘uphill task' of theirs.

steven_gerrard.jpgIt has been a month since the World Cup has ended but the terrible feeling of defeat for England still lingers around. Now trying to pick their selves up, manager Fabio Capello has been given another chance to redeem himself and turn things around. England, like many of the other big teams who added young talent to the squad, had changed things around drastically by dropping David James, Ledley King and Peter Crouch for youngsters Adam Johnson, Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere in their friendly against Hungary.

The Italian experimented with three formations, a 4-3-3 for the first half, the old 4-2-2 and then a 4-2-3-1 with Steven Gerard in the middle which was a positive change for England as the stand-in captain thumped in two superb goals - one a 20-yard thunderbolt and another where he twinkle toed around the Hungary defence before slotting home. Phil Jagielka had a bad night missing an easy opportunity to score for England in the sixth minute and then gifted Hungary an own goal which brought the whole technology debate back into focus as the ball appeared to have never crossed the line.

cesc_fabregas_2.jpgAnother season beckons and it's another one of optimism at Arsenal as fans and club management alike pray that the time has finally come when Wenger's rampant "invest in youth only" policy bears fruit. Arsenal have the distinction of having played arguably the most attractive football in the Premier League for the past two seasons. However, one component that has been glaringly absent from their repertoire has been "effectiveness". For all their crisp passing and quick one touch football they have lacked the ruthless efficiency that is a necessary hallmark of champion sides. Last season was a classic example of this as losing their nerve at crucial junctures led to their ousting from the Champions League and FA Cup and their inability to dispose of less accomplished sides cost them dear in the Premier League title race.

Arsene Wenger in spite of having been at the helm during one of the club's most successful periods has come in for criticism for his reluctance to bring in a high profile signing befitting a club of Arsenal's stature. Wenger has continued his policy of not splashing out too much cash in the transfer window this season too and has bought in Marouane Chamakh for free and Laurent Koscielny for a paltry sum. Whether these signings will adequately cover up last season's deficiencies remains to be seen.
