Real Madrid close in on La Liga title with 4-1 hammering of Celta

Cristiano Ronaldo contributed a brace as Real Madrid pounded Celta Vigo 4-1 in a Spanish top division football match. Wednesday night's outcome leaves Real Madrid needing only a draw against Malaga next weekend to claim the La Liga title.

Ronaldo put the visitors ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute, blasting the ball past Celta goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez after a pass from Isco Alarcon.


Former Liverpool fan favourite Dirk Kuyt announces retirement

Feyenoord Rotterdam captain and former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt on Wednesday announced his retirement, ending a 19-year-long professional career which has seen him become one of the most versatile footballers.

"Throughout my career I have always followed my heart when taking decisions and that goes for this one too," Kuyt said in a statement posted on the Feyenoord website.


La Liga: Barcelona and Real Madrid win to take title race down to the wire

Neymar scored a hat-trick for FC Barcelona as the La Liga leaders won 4-1 in Las Palmas to ensure that the race for the title will go into the last weekend of the football season.

Paris Saint-Germain will be unable to defend their title despite a 5-0 victory over Saint-Etienne as Monaco have a far superior goal difference and a game in hand.


Radamel Falcao scored one goal apiece in both halves on Sunday. His attacking partner Kylian Mbappe finished two assists with his speed and agility to Bernardo Silva and Falcao. With two minutes remaining, the leaders sealed a four-goal win with Lille player Junior Alonso's own goal.


Bundesliga Round-up: Bayern beat Leipzig 5-4 in thrilling encounter

Bayern Munich bounced back to defeat RB Leipzig 5-4 in an away tie while Hoffenheim beat Werder Bremen 5-3 in their Bundesliga football matches.

League leaders Bayern Munich turned the tide in a nine-goal thriller to flabbergast hosts Leipzig on Saturday evening. Leipzig broke the deadlock just two minutes into the encounter. The newcomers to the German top division took the lead when Emil Forsberg's cross to the far post found Marcel Sabitzer, who nodded home.

Borussia Dortmund chief coach Thomas Tuchel could be free to move on in the next few weeks.
