E-mail Print

Euro 2012 qualifiers begin in earnest on Friday, as the Magnificent 7 of European football - Germany, England, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France & Netherlands - are in action. Spain will look to continue their good form and begin their defence of their European crown, whereas England, Italy & France look to put their World Cup disappointments behind them. Netherlands & Germany will look to repeat their excellent World Cup performances in what promises to be an action-packed night.

Belgium vs Germany (Group A)

mesut_oezil.jpgGermany hope to carry their exciting World Cup form into the Euro 2012 tournament, trusting themselves to begin their campaign on a positive note against Belgium. The return to fitness of Rene Adler, Heiko Westermann & Christian Trasch compensates for the loss of Arne Friedrich, Jerome Boateng, Piotr Trochowski and Dennis Aogo due to injury. Coach Joachim Low acknowledged the praise Germany received for their World Cup performances but has put that aside to look forward to "a new chapter". Belgium welcome back veteran anchor-man Timmy Simons into the fold, while losing 5 players due to injury. Belgium coach Georges Leekens will be well aware of his nation's dismal record against Germany yet ought to expect his side, which features some of the most talented young players in the world like Eden Hazard, Steven Defour & Moussa Dembele, to trouble Germany. This fixture is likely to be pivotal as both Belgium & Germany along with Turkey expect to compete for the top two spots in Group A which also features Austria, Kazakhstan & Azerbaijan.

robinho.jpgTransfer deadline day fever took over all of Europe today, with rumors and gossip reigning supreme. Teams looked to wrap up last minute deals for players as the clock ticked down, here's a look at some of the big stories that unfolded during the day.

The biggest news grabber of the day was Robinho's move to AC Milan from Manchester City for a reported £12.5 million transfer fee. The Brazilian was signed by City 2 years ago to the day for a British record fee of £32.5 million from Real Madrid, signalling the intentions of the new Mid-Eastern owners. But the player failed to settle in England and spent the 2nd half of last season on loan at Santos. His move to the San Siro brings to an end the summer long speculation over his future. Though it would be easy to pass off the transfer as 20 million down the tube, the reality is that to a large extent the Robinho signing achieved what it was supposed to. It announced the presence of a new superpower on the European arena, and set the stage for transfers of other players who would never have given Manchester City a second glance. So perhaps not all doom and gloom there.

lionel_messi_2.jpgLa Liga finally ended its long summer sabbatical and was back in action over the weekend, enthralling fans with the kind of football that only the Spanish League can deliver. Real Madrid started the season with a tame 0-0 draw against Real Mallorca. Champions Barcelona on the other hand cruised to a 3-0 victory over Racing Santander, with David Villa scoring on his debut. Elsewhere, Valencia won 3-1 at Malaga thanks to a brace from Joaquin Sanchez and Sevilla hammered Levante 4-1 as Abdoulay Konko netted a brace.

Madrid had to settle for a point at Mallorca, as a frustrated Jose Mourinho watched his side waste numerous chances to seal victory. New signings, Ricardo Carvalho and Angel Di Maria started for the away side as they controlled possession for large portions of the game. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain were uncharacteristically wasteful in front of goal but all credit to Mallorca keeper Dudu Aouate who made save after save to deny Madrid. Overall a disappointing start to the season for Mourinho's men as they've given arch rivals Barcelona an early head start. Ronaldo also picked up a knock in the game and will have some scans on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

javier_mascherano.jpgFC Barcelona has signed midfielder Javier Mascherano from Liverpool today for a reported €22 million transfer fee. The Argentine has agreed a four year deal where he will earn up to €5.5 million per season. The protracted transfer has at times turned ugly, with the player refusing to play for Liverpool and with manager new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson terming the Argentine skipper's behaviour unprofessional. Inter Milan and Barcelona were the two clubs interested in the midfielder, but Inter were put off by Liverpool's asking price. Barcelona were in need of a defensive midfielder after Yaya Toure was sold to Manchester City in the summer and Mascherano will be a great addition to their squad.

The departure of Rafa Benitez brought a cloud of uncertainty over Anfield and Mascherano was one among a list of players being linked with a move away from the club. After a summer of speculation, Barcelona finally put in a bid of £15 million plus Alex Hleb but the offer was rejected by the Reds, who were looking to cash in on the purchase. Inter Milan made a late offer of £6 million plus Sulley Muntari , which was thought to be a "joke" by the Liverpool officials. Hodgson explained, "I saw a fax but I think it was sent tongue in cheek. It was so unbelievably far from our valuation that we didn't bother to answer." Later, Mascherano's agent was quoted saying, "Javier would love to play for Barcelona next season. The player and all of us would love to see him sign for them."

Exclusive FIFA.com interview with Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk

bert_van_marwijk.jpgHis players describe him as being close to them and ready to listen, and after spending half an hour in the presence of Bert van Marwijk at the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) headquarters, it is easy to see why. "I like to be surrounded by people who want to improve," the Netherlands coach told FIFA.com less than two months after leading his side to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Final.

Before taking the Oranje reins, Van Marwijk carved out a solid reputation in his homeland. His first coaching experience came at Maastricht in 1982, and after spending four years there he took on another five posts before being appointed by Feyenoord in the summer of 2000. The Rotterdam side provided him with an excellent platform and in 2002 he masterminded their UEFA Cup triumph, earning himself a move to Borussia Dortmund two years later. Van Marwijk failed to clinch any trophies with the Ruhr outfit but the experience proved invaluable, and after returning to Feyenoord he claimed the Dutch Cup in 2008 in his final campaign before replacing Marco van Basten.

zlatan_ibrahimovic_2.jpgAC Milan have signed Zlatan Inrahimovic on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona. The Swedish striker had been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp this summer, after an indifferent first season with the Spanish Champions. His reported fallout with Manager Pep Guardiola has led to the Club offloading their record signing. AC Milan have the option sign the striker permanently for €24million at the end of the loan period.

Ibrahimovic joined Barcelona from Inter Milan last summer as part of a mega deal worth €66 million with Samuel Eto'o moving the other way. The Swede had a reasonably successful first season at Barcelona scoring 21 goals but his strained relationship with Guardiola, who the striker claimed hasn't spoken to him in six months and the signing of David VIlla in the summer has eventually led to his exit.
