Australia build commanding lead over Czech Republic in the Davis Cup

Commanding performances from Jordan Thompson and Nick Kyrgios have given Australia a 2-0 lead over Czech Republic in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, in Melbourne.

Debutant Thompson got the host nation off to a flying start by beating world No.54 Jiri Vesely 6-3 6-3 6-4. World No.15 Kyrgios then defeated Czech debutant Jan Satral in the second singles rubber, winning 6-2 6-3 6-2 to put Australia in charge of the tie.


Davis Cup draw set for Canada vs. Great Britain this weekend

The official draw for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first-round tie between Canada and Great Britain took place Thursday in the Reading Room at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, determining the match-ups for the weekend ahead. Canada and Great Britain will face off on an indoor hard court at TD Place in Ottawa from February 3-5, with the winner moving on to the World Group quarter-finals in April.

The Canadian Davis Cup team consisting of Daniel Nestor (Toronto), Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver), Peter Polansky (Thornhill, Ont.), and Denis Shapovalov (Richmond Hill, Ont.) will take on Great Britain in two singles matches on Friday, a doubles match on Saturday, and two reverse singles matches on Sunday. Leading the squad through the tie is longtime Canadian Davis Cup team captain Martin Laurendeau.


Feliciano Lopez replaces Nadal in Spanish team for Davis Cup

Feliciano Lopez on Monday joined the Spanish Davis Cup tennis team in Osijek, where he will play against Croatia, replacing Rafael Nadal.

Lopez joined the team after the head of medical services at the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation advised against Nadal's participation during his recovery after the Australian Open, reports Efe.

The Spanish team for the Davis Cup consists of Feliciano Lopez, Roberto Bautista, Pablo Carreño and Marc Lopez.


Peter Polansky to replace Milos Raonic in Davis Cup

Tennis Canada announced Friday that Peter Polansky will be joining the Canadian team for its Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first-round tie against Great Britain, set for February 3-5, 2017 at TD Place in Ottawa. Polansky will be replacing Milos Raonic, who will be unavailable for this tie due to an adductor injury suffered in his Australian Open quarter-final match on Wednesday.

“I am sad and disappointed that I am unable to compete alongside the Canadian Davis Cup team versus Great Britain,” said Raonic. “I sustained an injury during my previous match in Australia that will keep me off the court for the coming weeks. I wish all the best to my teammates and my full support is behind them in this exciting tie held in Ottawa.”


Italian Davis Cup squad announced for Argentina tie

The Italian Tennis Federation named Fabio Fognini, Andreas Seppi, Simone Bolelli and Paolo Lorenzi as the four members of the team to play defending champions Argentina in the first round of the 2017 Davis Cup next month, .

Bolelli, 31 and world no. 459, is the main addition for the team after being out in the last part of the 2016 season because of an injury to his left knee.
