Sweden beat France 2-1 and star forward Cristiano Ronaldo got a brace as Portugal rolled over Latvia 3-0 in the sixth round of the European qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Olivier Giroud put France 1-0 ahead on Friday with an outstanding goal, but Jimmy Durmaz equalised for the hosts just before half time and the Swedes went on to eke out a win with Ola Toivonen's goal in the 93rd minute. The result leaves France and Sweden level on points at 13, but the Nordics take possession of top spot in Group A by virtue of goal difference.

The U.S. Women's National Team opened its two-game European tour with a 1-0 shutout against Sweden at Gamla Ullevi Stadium as 22-year-old midfielder Rose Lavelle scored the lone goal of the match in the 56th minute.

The U.S. had several good chances in the first half, including a Carli Lloyd shot from a Meghan Klingenberg cross that she knocked just wide and a semi-breakaway from Crystal Dunn, who fired at the net and forced the Sweden goalkeeper into a kick-save.

England defeated Scotland 3-0 in the fourth round of the European qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup even as France had to come from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Sweden. Defending champions Germany, meanwhile, pummeled San Marino 8-0 on Friday to remain perfect in the competition.

The English prevailed at Wembley through goals by Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill to claim the top spot in Group F with 10 points, two ahead of Slovenia, who eked out a 1-0 win away at Malta. Slovakia vaulted over Lithuania into third place in the group with a 4-0 defeat of the Baltic side, who have five points.

The German women's soccer team has defeated Sweden 2-1 to win the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Both teams on Friday squandered scoring opportunities in the first half, but German striker Dzsenifer Marozsan broke the deadlock just three minutes after the restart, beating Sweden goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl with a shot that curled just inside the left post.

The Swedish women's football team beat hosts Brazil 4-3 on penalties to reach the Olympic gold medal match for the first time.

Most of the 66,000 people who flocked to Rio's legendary Maracana Stadium for Tuesday's clash were expecting to see the Brazilian women take another step toward the Olympic triumph that has eluded this football-mad country.

The U.S. Women's National Team fell to Sweden 4-3 in a penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 through 120 minutes of U.S. dominated action at Mané Garrincha Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Sweden was content to soak up U.S. pressure throughout the match and into extra time, dropping deep into its own half and looking for the counter-attack. The USA out-shot Sweden 27-6, but put just six shots on goal.
