West Ham United have announced the signing of veteran Portuguese defender Jose Fonte from their English football league rival Southampton on a two-and-a-half-year contract for a fee of eight million pounds ($9.9 million).

"I signed for West Ham because they are a great club and a very big club. They have a lot of fans and I have known for a number of years how passionate they are," the 33-year-old Euro 2016 winner with Portugal told West Ham's website on Friday night.

Southampton will hope that they are not left to rue missed opportunities as the Saints will take a narrow 1-0 lead back with them to Anfield in their League Cup semi-final second leg. Southampton won the first leg at the St. Mary's Stadium thanks to Nathan Redmond's 20th minute goal, but really should be out of sight in this tie after having had chances galore to put the tie to bed against a Liverpool side that just didn't turn up.

Both teams made changes galore to the sides that took to the field in the FA Cup tie at the weekend, but it was Southampton that looked the more settled as the game wore on, despite been on a terrible recent run of results.

Southampton ended Arsenal's unbeaten run in all competitions at 19 matches, beating the Gunners 2-0 to knock the North London giants out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage, the third straight time that Arsenal have been beaten at home by Premier League opposition in this competition, one which Manager Arsene Wenger perpetually uses to blood young players - despite being just 3 wins away from a trophy.

Arsenal made 10 changes to the side that beat Bournemouth at the weekend with Mohamed Elneny the only member of that winning team to keep his place in the starting eleven. Southampton meanwhile made 8 changes of their own, though the experience of the players that they brought in for this game was there for all to see.

Chelsea Manager Antonio Conte was predictably in a buoyant mood after his side beat Southampton 2-0 at St. Mary's to record their fourth consecutive win and clean sheet in the Premier League.

Ever since the defeat at the hands of Arsenal, Chelsea have changed their system to a more balanced 3-4-3, and the change has worked wonders for Conte as his side are very much in contention for the Premier League title, moving to within a point of the Premier League's leading trio.

Chelsea moved back to within a point of the leading trio of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool with a convincing 2-0 win over a Southampton side that saw plenty of the ball, but had absolutely no answer to the Blues' 3-4-3 system with Manager Antonio Conte once again getting both his tactics and his personnel spot on.

After changing things in midweek for the League Cup trip to West Ham United, Conte reverted to the same starting eleven that hammered Manchester United 4-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend, and was rewarded with another excellent display at both ends of the pitch.
