A hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid bounce back against Japanese side Kashima Antlers and win the Club World Cup 4-2 in an exciting final at the International Stadium in Yokohama on Sunday.

Real Madrid scored early when Luka Modric took a shot on target that was deflected by the goalkeeper before it arrived to Karim Benzema, who put it into the back of the net, in the ninth minute.

FIFA pruned a list of 23 names down to the elite trio after voting by captains and coaches of national teams, select members of the media and fans on fifa.com. The winner will be crowned on January 9.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday signed a new contract with Real Madrid until 2021 in an event held at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Cristiano's current contract would have ended in June 2018 after extending his first contract in March 2013. Monday's extension will allow Ronaldo to play with the Los Blancos until he turns 36, all but ending speculation that the former Manchester United forward would ever return to Old Trafford.

Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is "unbeatable" in the race to win the 2016 Ballon d'Or, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said. Ronaldo is a firm favourite for a fourth career Ballon d'Or award after 51 goals in 2015-16 as his club won last season's Champions League, and the Portugal captain then lifted the Euro 2016 trophy in June after scoring three times in the competition.

While other candidates including Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi are thought to still be in the running, Ferguson told Spanish publication Marca: "I cannot think of anyone better to take the Ballon d'Or trophy. One of my proudest moments are those when I recall the part Manchester United played in his career. We wish him the best."
