roddick_returnsDay 10 of the US Open will remain etched in the memories of the New York fans for many more years to come as "Black Wednesday" witnessed the curtain falling on one of the greatest American tennis player's of the modern era, the 20th seed, Andy Roddick. Roddick had the unenviable responsibility of single-handedly keeping American tennis in the limelight for the better part of the past decade. He bid farewell to the tennis world on Wednesday afternoon, losing in four competitive sets to the 2009 US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro. The match, which was carried over to Wednesday due to heavy rains that washed out majority of the matches on day 9, resumed with Roddick leading 1-0 in the 1st tie-breaker. He was to take that tiebreak, before dropping the next three sets to go down 67(1) 76(4) 62 64.

Even though, Roddick came out of the blocks guns blazing, running away with the first set, the sad truth started manifesting itself as the Argentine started finding his rhythm on his serve and powerful groundstrokes, outmatching the American from the back of the court with both consistency and power. Nevertheless, Roddick managed to keep the match overwhelmingly close thanks in no small part to his booming serve. and his willingness to attack on the slightest of opportunities, saw him blasting a total of 57 winners as compared to 51 from his opponents. However, after 195 minutes of riveting tennis, Del Potro took the role of the villain, finishing off Roddick's career to proceed to his first US Open quarterfinal since 2009 where he is scheduled to meet the World no.2 and defending champion, Novak Djokovic in a blockbuster clash.

It was a day of shocks and upsets at The Aegon Championship in London as 9 seeded players including the top seed faltered today. However, 2nd Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and 3rd seed Janko Tipsarevic survived whirlwind Wednesday to keep their title challenge alive.

The biggest upset of the day was definitely the departure of top seeded Briton Andy Murray as he was defeated by Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, who was immortalized for that marathon Wimbledon match against John Isner. The match experienced some fierce battle between the giant and the giant-killer as both the 2nd and 3rd sets were decided by tie-breakers and it was Mahut, who kept his cool at the end to take the match 6-3, 6-7, 7-6.

One took five sets, the other took two, but in the end both lower ranked players in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open got the better of their more fancied opponents. Marin Cilic, the no.14 seed, came through his third five-setter in four rounds to down former US Open champion Andy Roddick 7-6 (4), 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3 before Andy Murray knocked out the defending champion and world no.2 Rafael Nadal. Murray was up by two sets to love and a break to the good in third when the 6-time Grand Slam champion called it quits due to the recurrence of a knee injury that plagued him most of last season.

marin_cilic4.jpgAfter two rather short women's quarter-finals, the 15,000 fans who had packed into Rod Laver Arena to enjoy 'Australia Day' were given a real treat by Cilic and Roddick. Not surprisingly for two players separated by 6-years in age, the pair had met just twice previously, with a win each to their credit. The 6'6" Croat had youth, a powerful all-round game, loads of confidence and a real hunger on his side, while the American had bags of experience, one of the best serves in the game and some good old fashioned luck finally going for him following his win over Fernando Gonzalez in the previous round.
