Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Indian medallists at the recently-held Rio Paralympics, saying his government was working on bringing a proper scheme for the development of para-athletes.

"Every citizen of the country developed an emotional attachment with our sportspersons in Paralympics. India is on the path to bring a proper scheme for Paralympics and its development," Modi said in his monthly radio broadcast "Mann ki Baat".

China became only the third country to win more than 100 gold medals at a single edition of the Paralympic Games, celebrating nine more victories in Rio. Seven of those on Saturday came in athletics with two each in table tennis and swimming as China ended the day with 105 gold, 81 silver and 51 bronze medals.

The United States and Britain are the only other nations to achieve a century of gold medals at a single Paralympics. Both did so at the 1984 Games in New York, when the US claimed 136 victories and Britain 107.

India's Virender Dhankar finished eighth in the men's shot put - F56/57 final at the Rio Paralympic Games on Saturday.  Virender finished with a best of 11.62 metre in his six attempts at the Olympic stadium.

Huang Wenpan celebrated his fourth victory in Rio's pool as China added another nine golds to its Paralympic Games medal tally. Huang shattered the world record to win the 200m freestyle S3 final in three minutes and 9.04 seconds at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Thursday, reports Xinhua. The 21-year-old's time was 7.41 seconds faster than the previous record set by his countryman Li Hanhua in 2010.

Despite his extraordinary time, Huang was pushed to the limit by Ukraine's Dmytro Vynohradets, who grabbed silver, just 0.73sec behind. Li took bronze in 3:23.10.
