Riding on a couple of early strikes in the first 10 minutes, Spanish football giants Valencia eked out a 2-1 victory over mighty Real Madrid, who missed a chance to consolidate their hold on first place in La Liga.

The early lead for the hosts conditioned the course of Wednesday's match, with Valencia practically ceding possession to Los Blancos and relying on compact defending to preserve the advantage. Simone Zaza scored for Valencia in the fifth minute and Orellana connected just four minutes later in front of 45,000 fans at the Mestalla.

Real Madrid will play one of the two games they currently have in hand over their rivals for the La Liga football title when they travel to play Valencia away in the Mestalla Stadium on Wednesday.

Madrid will travel with a one-point lead over FC Barcelona and on the back of a comfortable 2-0 win over Espanyol on Saturday afternoon in which coach Zinedine Zidane was able to rest players such as Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, Marcelo and Sergio Ramos.

Real Madrid have the chance to further extend their lead at the top of the La Liga on Saturday which promises to be decisive in the outcome of the title race. Real entertain Espanyol in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium before travelling to play one of the two games they have in hand over their title rivals in Valencia on Wednesday.

Saturday's game comes on the back of Madrid's 3-1 win at home over Napoli in which they played some of their best football of the year to come back from a goal down.

Real Madrid ended Napoli's 18-game unbeaten run to take an important step towards the quarter-finals of the Champions League as they look to defend the title they won last season.

Goals from Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Casemiro on Wednesday evening allowed Zinedine Zidane's side to overturn an early opening goal from the visitors and give Madrid a two-goal cushion ahead of the return leg.

Chinese Super League (CSL) outfit Shanghai SIPG on Wednesday confirmed the signing of former Real Madrid and Chelsea footballer Ricardo Carvalho.

"We have completed the signing since we came back from the winter training in Doha, why we announced so late is because the registration was unsettled and we had to think carefully about the use of the veteran under the new policy of foreign players," SIPG said.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has not ruled out changing his jersey number from 4 to 93 to immortalise his equaliser goal in 90+3 minutes in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid, which paved the road for a 4-1 victory in extra time.

Real Madrid edged past last-placed Osasuna 3-1 at the El Sadar football stadium in La Liga.

Real ended the first half tied with Osasuna 1-1 despite an initial goal by Ronaldo in the 24th minute. Osasuna, who lost Tano due to a serious injury in the 13th minute, threatened the visitors' goal more during the first half than the other way around as might have been expected.
