An all-round effort from the India Red players helped the side thrash India Green by 219 runs in the opening match of the Duleep Trophy cricket tournament at the Greater Noida Sports Complex ground on the outskirts of Delhi on Friday. With the win, the Yuvraj Singh-led brigade secured six points by virtue of an outright win in what was the country's maiden first-class game played with the pink ball.

After a miserable first innings performance by the batting units of both sides, where India Red managed to take a slender 10-run lead, Man-of-the-Match Abhinav Mukund (77 in first innings, 169 in second) once again flourished in the second essay to take the side to a mammoth 486, with valuable contributions from centurion Sudip Chatterjee (114) and Gurkeerat Singh (82).

Fifty players were up for grabs on Tuesday afternoon as the braintrust of new IPL teams Pune and Rajkot were allowed first grab at 5 players each before the 'real' IPL auction gets underway in February next year.

Pune, by virtue of bidding higher for the rights to their team, were given the right to choose first, and unsurprisingly they opted for Skipper MS Dhoni. Rajkot followed suit by buying IPL legend Suresh Raina, who might finally get a chance to show his leadership potential in this format.

The Chennai Super Kings squeezed out a narrow 12 run win against their fellow IPL team, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, to go top of Group B in the Champions League T20 at the midway stage of the tournament. It was raining sixes at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi as local boy MS Dhoni entertained his home town fans by smashing an unbeaten 63 from just 19 balls to power Chennai to an imposing total of 202-4 in their 20 overs.

The foundation for Chennai's innings had been laid by Suresh Raina, who produced another good innings, ending with 84 from 57 balls before he was brilliantly caught at long on by a leaping Thisara Perera off Dale Steyn. Despite all the carnage, the South Africa duo of Steyn and JP Duminy returned figures of 4-50 between them from 8 overs, while an under bowled Amit Mishra conceded just 13 runs from his 2 overs with rookie skipper Shikhar Dhawan once again missing a trick. Dhoni's explosion came late in the innings as he carted Thisara Perera for 5 sixes in an over which went for 34, which in the end might have determined the outcome of the game.

AB de Villiers set the Champions League T20 tournament alight with his innings of 77 off just 36 balls (3 fours and 7 sixes) when The Unlimited Titans played their opening match against the Chennai Super Kings at Ranchi on Sunday. In the end it was not enough to get his team over the line as Chennai won by four wickets with seven balls to spare thanks to the outstanding contributions from Mike Hussey and Man-of-the-Match Suresh Raina who both played quick-fire innings of 47.

They took the match away from the Titans as they put on 73 for the loss of only one wicket in the six power play overs in pursuit of a target of 186.

In normal circumstances the Titans’  total of 185/5 would have been well above par but, with the bowlers struggling to grip the ball in the heavy dew conditions from the start of the match, it was always going to be a match dominated by the batsmen.

An exceptional 45 from just 16 balls, littered with 3 sixes and 4 fours, from Skipper MS Dhoni helped the Chennai Super Kings recover from a slow start and post a competitive 164-3 from their 20 overs against the forlorn Pune Warriors at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune. The runs proved to be more than enough as Chennai cruised to an easy win as the Warriors were never really in the hunt, sliding to 61-6 early in the run chase, and eventually ending a substantial 37 runs shy. The win takes Chennai well clear at the top of the table with 16 points and virtually guarantees them a spot in the play-offs.

Batting first on winning the toss, Chennai suffered the rare early loss of Michael Hussey for just 5 as Kane Richardson knocked over his veteran compatriot with just his 3rd ball. Wriddhiman Saha also fell early for 13, leg before to Rahul Sharma, leaving CSK in a spot of bother at 28-2.
