Indian star Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas survived a tough three-set battle to enter the third round of the men's doubles competition at the French Open tennis tournament here on Friday.

The ninth seeds were made to sweat by the unseeded duo of Dennis Istomin of Uzbekistan and Treat Huey of the Philippines before notching up a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 victory following a gruelling encounter that stretched over two hours and 14 minutes.

India's non-playing captain Mahesh Bhupathi on Tuesday selected four singles players in the squad for the Davis Cup tie against Uzbekistan, dropping veteran Leander Paes and his doubles partner Rohan Bopanna to the reserves.

Paes is on the cusp of becoming the tournament's most successful doubles player and the Uzbekistan match may well be the last chance for him to claim the all-time record on home turf after losing the doubles against New Zealand with Vishnu Vardhan. Paes is currently tied with Italy's Nicola Pietrangeli on 42 wins.

Sania Mirza and her Czech partner Barbora Strycova scored a straight sets win to enter the women's doubles quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open 2017 tennis tournament on Saturday.

The Indo-Czech pair needed around 64 minutes to beat Sara Errani of Italy and Alicja Rosolska of Poland 6-2, 6-3.

Veteran Leander Paes and his mixed doubles partner Martina Hingis were knocked out of the Australian Open in a 3-6, 2-6 defeat by Sam Groth and Samantha Stosur in the quarter-finals on Thursday. The Indo-Swiss pair went down without putting up much of a fight, surrendering in only 55 minutes at Melbourne Park.

The Australian pair were dominant from the start, hitting as many as 12 aces in the match, nine more than their opponents. They also hit 29 winners, nine more than the experienced Paes-Martina, and won 56 of the total 93 points played in the match, converting four of the seven break points received.

Indian tennis veteran Leander Paes and his Swiss mixed doubles partner Martina Hingis entered the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Monday. Paes and Martina beat Australians Casey Dellacqua and Matt Reid 6-2, 6-3 in a second round match at Melbourne Park in 54 minutes.

The Indo-Swiss pair got an early break in the fourth game of the first set. They led 5-2 shortly after and then broke their opponents' serve again to claim the first set in 24 minutes.

Leander Paes, India's never-give-up tennis star, said he hopes to work well under the captaincy of his former doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi since "we are good friends".

"I don't forsee any problem. I will remain calm and collected," he told IANS a few hours after he lost in the first round of the doubles event at the Australian Open in three sets.

After losing a late night encounter against the Indian men's doubles pair of Divij Sharan and Purav Raja, tennis legend Leander Paes dismissed all talk of retirement, saying he hoped to be back holding aloft the Chennai Open trophy next year.

Over the past few days, tennis stars Somdev Devvarman and Ana Ivanovic have retired, evoking an emotional Paes to reflect on life after tennis and beyond winning Grand Slams. It caused widespread speculation that an impending retirement was on the cards for the veteran as well.
