A Brazilian court has frozen bank accounts belonging to Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes, who is accused of malfeasance in connection with the construction of the golf course used during the 2016 Olympics.

The Friday's order also applies to Fiori, the firm that won the contract to build the course, which never paid 2.39 million reais ($710,000) in environmental assessments on the project. The assessments were waived "contrary to all to the recommendations of the Environmental Secretariat", prosecutors said in the indictment.

Only one month after claiming the men's 20-kilometre race walk title at the Rio Olympic Games, China's Wang Zhen has already set his sights on defending gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

"I do not know how fast I will be able to walk in four years, after all a person's form and physical condition can be different each and every day. But I will just try my best to maintain my form," said the 25-year-old Wang on Tuesday.

Rome's grassroots Mayor Virginia Raggi has rejected a bid to host the 2024 Olympics as financially "irresponsible" for the cash-strapped capital, a move that has effectively dealt a fatal blow to its candidacy.

"This is our position: It is irresponsible to say yes to this candidature," she told a packed media conference on Wednesday.
