leander paes

Leander Paes wrote another chapter in the annals of Indian tennis folklore by joining co-legend Mahesh Bhupathi at the top of the charts of Grand Slam glory by winning his 11th Doubles title at the 2010 Australian Open playing alongside Zimbabwean Cara Black. The pair of Paes and Black, top seeds at the Open, were far too good for the scratch team of Jaroslav Levinsky and Ekaterina Makarova, playing in their first ever Grand Slam final.

Having lost back-to-back finals in 2009 at Wimbledon and the US Open, the pair of Paes and Black eventually proved third time lucky.

paes1.jpgIt was the battle of the Indian tennis legends as Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi squared-off in the final of the US Open Men's Doubles. Paes, who won the French Open doubles title with partner Lukas Dlouhy earlier this year, put one over his former teammate as he and Dlouhy mounted a spirited comeback to record an entertaining win at Flushing Meadows, New York.

With Bhupathi and his partner Mark Knowles from the Bahamas, up a set and a break, the match looked to be slipping out of the hands of Dlouhy and Paes, but they played some memorable defensive tennis to win 6 of the next 7 games to level the match at a set apiece, before running away with the third set to record a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.

The early exchanges in the first set defin

If this were a boxing match it would never have been allowed. On the basis of professional achievement, Leander Paes & Cara Black would be the equivalent of a Joe Frazier and their opponents Carly Gullickson & Travis Parrott the novice flyweight. 101 tour doubles titles, 17 Slams & 29 finals in the Slams buttressed a 2nd seeding in the doubles while their opponents were wildcards nowhere in the vicinity of the pedigree of their opponents and nearly not even playing in the mixed doubles. Oh! Did I mention? The Indo - Zim pair were also the defending champions. But if ever a match wasn't played on paper, this was it. Th

paes1.jpgLeander Paes turned back the clock winning the French Open Men's Doubles title for the third time with young Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy. It was a deserving reward for some exceptional doubles play by the 3rd seeds as they put paid to the hopes of the unseeded pair of Moodie & Norman. Leander Paes put in a typically irrepressible performance and was well supported by his young partner Dlouhy. It was Leander's 5th doubles slam and Dlouhy's first. The pair had also reached the finals of the US Open last year where they lost to the Bryan brothers. For Read more...
dinara_safina_5.jpgDinara Safina lived up to her top-seeded billing and took her appointed place in the finals of the French Open defeating Dominika Cibulkova here at Roland Garros. On a bright Thursday afternoon Safina cruised past the challenge of the young, first time semifinalist in straight sets. Facing her in the finals on Saturday will be Svetlana Kuznetsova, who got past Aussie Sam Stosur. Kuznetsova's scrambling and her ability to turn defense into offence ultimately overcame Stosur's big hitting aggression as she progressed in yet another deciding set. Lean

leander_mahesh_dc.jpgUnbeaten since 1996 as a pair in the Davis Cup, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi went into their doubles rubber against Tsung-Hua Yang & Chu-Huan Yi as massive favourites. The Indian Express were made to work hard against their less illustrious opponents, winning their tie in four highly competitive sets 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 to give India a 2-1 lead going into the reverse singles on Sunday. Yesterday, Somdev Devvarman had given India a 1-0 lead in the tie beating Ti Chen in straight sets before Yen-Hsun Lu levelled the tie at 1-1.

Yang was broken in the opening game of the match as Leander and Mahesh raced to the net

dinara_safina_2.jpgDinara Safina and Serena Williams will draw swords in Saturday's Women's Singles Final after recording resounding victories in their respective semi-final encounters at the Australian Open earlier today.
