Brazil’s long search for Olympic goal eluded them for the umpteenth time as Mexico stunned the Samba boys 2-1 at Wembley Stadium. Oribe Peralta was the hero for Mexico as his brace gave the country their first gold at the London 2012 games. Brazil were utterly abysmal in defence and that eventually cost them the game as Hulk’s injury-time goal only proved to be a late consolation.

Mano Menezes put out a strong squad which included the usual pack of Neymar, Damiao and Oscar in attack while Thiago Silva and Juan were the experienced heads in defence. The Mexicans had Peralta and Fabian up front, with Diego Reyes the immense figure at the back.

Despite having two of their men sent off in their quarterfinal encounter at St. James' Park, Honduras gave Mano Menezes' Brazil side a good run for their money before eventually losing 3-2 to the Selacao.

Strong pre-season favourites Brazil came into the game on the back of a comfortable 3-0 victory over New Zealand, but saw three changes from the starting eleven on that occasion, as Hulk came into the line-up to partner Leandro Damiao upfront, while Oscar and Romulu replaced Danilo and Alex Sandro.

Team GB suffered an almost identical fate to that of the England side at the European Championships earlier in the summer, as Stuart Pearce's team were beaten in their quarterfinal encounter against Korea Republic on penalties, with Daniel Sturridge's miss proving to be the decider between the two sides.

The two sides were locked at a goal a piece after 120 minutes of football, as Aaron Ramsey scored for the hosts after Ji Dong-Won had found the opener on the half-hour mark. The Asian side however prevailed in the penalty shootouts after an enterprising performance on the field, earning them a semifinal meeting against pre-tournament favourites Brazil.

Liverpool have had a fairly quiet summer so far, in complete contrast to last year when Kenny Dalglish splashed millions on new imports. Brendan Rodgers on the other hand has been prudent with money as he has gone about painstakingly identifying players to suit his system. Fulham's Clint Dempsey happens to be one of them and the manager admitted that he is in talks with the Cottagers for the American.

Speaking during Liverpool's stop off at Boston as part of their pre-season tour of America, Rodgers told the club's website: "Clint is a player we've enquired about, it is as simple as that. Ian Ayre, our managing director, has spoken with to see what the position is. That is where we're at. Clint is a very talented player but we don't like to talk about other clubs' players."

Chelsea have seemingly lost out on one of their many targets to fill the right-back role as Marca reports that Maicon has chosen Real Madrid over the current European Champions. The Inter Milan defender is part of a large scale clearout in the Italian Serie A as a whole and Jose Mourinho has used this opportunity to snap up one of his former players. €8m is what Los Blancos will pay Inter for Maicon, with the player expected to sign a three-year contract.

Maicon was one of the stars under the 'Special One' during Inter's historic 'treble' season in 2010 and although age has caught up with the Brazilian, he is still a potent threat down the right. Madrid currently have Alvaro Arbeloa filling up the right-back role but Mourinho is keen on adding further dynamism to a line-up that ended Barcelona's hegemony over the Spanish game last season.
