Spain's David Ferrer defeated American Ernesto Escobedo to advance to the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

Ferrer took two hours and 46 minutes to achieve a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory in the second round.

Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record seventh Australian Open title with a hard earned win against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco while Rafael Nadal began with a convincing victory over German Florian Mayer at Melbourne Park on Tuesday.

World No.2 Djokovic won 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in two hours and 20 minutes to advance to the second round, with the second set alone taking over an hour. Djokovic raced to a 5-0 lead in the match and quickly closed out the opening set.

World no.1 Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the Shanghai Masters with a routine 6-3, 6-3 win against Italy's Fabio Fognini on Tuesday. Not as fortunate though was veteran Spaniard David Ferrer, stunned in three sets by compatriot Feliciano Lopez.

Djokovic resorted to his powerful all-round game to eliminate his Italian opponent in the second round, who had previously beaten Spaniard Albert Ramos in the first round.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray swept aside Spain's David Ferrer 6-2, 6-3 to make his first appearance in the China Open final in Beijing on Saturday. It is the ninth final of the season for Murray, who is yet to drop a set this week here.

"Yeah, I did well. I was obviously 2-1 down with a break in the first set. I mean, played very well. Even the period in the second set where he came back a bit, when he broke me, there was a lot of long points. Really good tennis I thought," said Murray.

The star-studded Spanish tennis squad arrived in New Delhi on Monday ahead of their Davis Cup World Group play-off tie against India.

The Spanish squad, which includes the likes of 14-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal and World No.13 David Ferrer, got down to business straight away after landing in the capital in the morning, taking to the courts at the DLTA complex for a practice session in evening.

Reigning Wimbledon and Olympic Champion Andy Murray led the way for the big guns into the second round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.

Murray looked in superb form as he brushed aside the challenge of Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 under lights.

Canadian powerhouse Milos Raonic continued his dream run at the Australian Open, becoming the first person from his country to reach the semi-finals of the tournament in its long history, setting up a date with world no.2 Andy Murray of Britain.

Raonic squared off against popular French showman Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals, and the duo produced an entertaining contest with Raonic taking every opportunity to move forward, while Monfils continued his habit of coming up with the spectacular.
