In the last round robin match of the 2016 edition of the World Tour Finals, Marin Cilic overcame Nishikori in 3 sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The match might well have been a dead rubber, but Cilic after a sluggish start found the motivation to turn it around clinching the last two sets against a fast fading Nishikori. The win is the first for Cilic at the season finale and pushes the Croat up to No.6 in the rankings, the highest of his career.

Today’s performance could well prove to be ideal preparation for the Davis Cup final against Argentina next week. Nishikori will now need to quickly regroup before his semifinal against Djokovic tomorrow evening. In the other semi, Murray takes on Raonic.

Japan's Kei Nishikori saved two match points in his 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 semi-final victory over Luxembourg's Gilles Muller at the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament here and will now take on Croatia's Marin Cilic for the title.

The third-seeded Nishikori needed two hours and 15 minutes to overcome the big-serving Muller on Saturday and extend his career record against the southpaw to 3-0. The Japanese world No. 5 won just 47 percent of his first-serve points in the first set, which he lost after dropping two service games.

American tennis player Jack Sock upset 2014 champion Marin Cilic of Croatia in surprisingly routine fashion, breezing into the US Open pre-quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory, while big names Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal also progressed to the Round of 16.

The 26th-seeded Sock, who is known for his huge forehand and big serve but not for a stellar return game, on Friday broke Cilic's serve four times in three sets to win in an hour and 41 minutes at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. Sock completely dominated his own service games, not facing a single break point in the contest.

In what turned out to be a wonderful Wednesday for the seeds at the Australian Open, all 14 of the men in action progressed to the third round, where quite a few of them will now run into each other before the week is out.

World no.1 Novak Djokovic was in action late in the evening, cruising in the opening couple of sets against Frenchman Quentin Halys, before having to battle back from an early break down and needing a tiebreak to progress in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Up next for the 5-time Australian Open champion is the 28th seed Andreas Seppi. The veteran Italian defeated American Denis Kudla in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

While all the talk around town was on Serena vs Venus at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday, the men's draw provided plenty of entertainment as world no.1 Novak Djokovic and defending champion Marin Cilic produced some impressive tennis to book their spots opposite each other in the US Open semi-finals.

Cilic, a surprise winner here last year, has struggled for form most of this season, going through the typical honeymoon period most first time Grand Slam winners tend to enjoy. A return to New York though saw him stop on court last week with a renewed confidence and a desire to defend his title. It also meant that the Croatian superstar has walked around all week with a target on his back and plenty hoping to be the player to take him down.
