China's hopes to qualify for the 2018 football World Cup have been rekindled as Italian head coach Marcello Lippi's wards registered a 1-0 home win over South Korea here on Thursday.

Yu Dabao headed in the Wang Yongpo corner in the 34th minute to give China the first win in six matches in the third phase of the World Cup Asian Zone qualifiers.

Newly-appointed coach Marcello Lippi improved China's performance but failed to bring the team a desperately-needed win over Qatar in the last stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Asian Zone qualifiers in Kunming on Tuesday. The goalless draw kept China at the bottom of the 6-team Group A which includes South Korea, Iran, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Syria, with only two points from five games.

The top two of the group will advance to Russia 2018 directly after home-and-away round-robin group league matches and the third finisher will have a play-off against their counterparts in Group B.

Badminton superstars Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei will not attend the Thaihot 2016 BWF China Open that kicks off on Tuesday in Fuzhou, but their absence could allow a new generation to rise to the occasion and pick up the torch.

As part of the Metlife BWF World Superseries Premier, the China Open will attract 214 shuttlers from 19 countries and regions around the world. Former Olympic champion Lin Dan of China did not register for the event, while Malaysian badminton king Chong Wei is sitting out the tournament due to injury, according to a BWF official.

On a day when the wind died down, Australia’s Taylor Cooper took advantage. And even though his final three holes were somewhat disappointing, the native of Gosford in New South Wales was more than happy with his 5-under 67 that gives him a two-shot lead after the first round of the Putian Open. He leads China’s Xuewei Luo by two shots and Guowu Zhou by three in this, the 11th event of the Ping An Bank China Tour – PGA TOUR China Series season.

“I’ve been hitting the ball really well, actually. It’s just the putter that’s been a bit of a struggle,” said Cooper, whose best finish in nine previous starts was a tie for 12th at the season-opening Henan Open in May. He is 65th on the Order of Merit. In his last three starts, Cooper withdrew from the Ping An Bank Open and then missed the cut last week in Hong Kong. “The putter has just showed up only here and there this season.”

India beat China 2-1 with a last-gasp goal in the final to emerge winners for the first time in the Women's Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament on Saturday. Deepika Thakur scored the winner in the 60th minute as she slammed home a penalty corner rebound to trigger celebrations in the Indian camp.

Deep Grace Ekka had given the Indians the lead in the 13th minute but Zhong Mengling pulled China level in the 44th minute.
