India's spinning allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin on Tuesday received the Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2016 as well as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2016 from former India captains and ICC Cricket Hall of Famers Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar.

During the voting period, which ran from September 14, 2015, to September 20, 2016, the 30-year-old from Chennai played eight Tests in which he took 48 wickets and scored 336 runs. Ashwin also claimed 27 wickets in 19 T20Is.

Legendary India tweaker Erapalli Prasanna on Monday rated offie Ravichandran Ashwin as the best spinner in the cricket world. Ashwin became the second fastest ever and the quickest Indian to reach 200 Test wickets when he got rid of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in the first Test in Kanpur on Sunday.

The Tamil Nadu off-spinner finished with a six-for in the second innings to help Virat Kohli's men pummel the Kiwis by 197 runs to take a 1-0 lead.

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will work towards regaining the No.1 spot in the Test bowlers rankings in the three-match series against New Zealand. The first match, India's 500th Test, will begin in Kanpur on Thursday.

Third-ranked Ashwin, who held the top spot for a fortnight at the end of 2015 and again for a week in July this year, starts the series just 19 points adrift of top-ranked Dale Steyn of South Africa and 11 points behind England's James Anderson.

India wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha is buoyant over his understanding with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and hopes it would augur well for the team as it readies to host New Zealand in a three-Test series, with the first match in Kanpur next week.

Saha notched up his maiden ton in the longest format of the game with a patient 104 in the third Test against the West Indies at St. Lucia's picturesque Gross Islet, cobbling up in the process a risk-free 213-run sixth wicket stand with Ashwin (118) that helped India recover from a precarious position to a thumping 237-run win last month.

India's Test skipper Virat Kohli has said that the team is not concerned about losing the No.1 position in the Test rankings as it isn't what motivates them to succeed.

India had to win the fourth and final Test against hosts West Indies to hold on to their No.1 Test spot, but with rain playing spoilsport, and the match ending in a draw, Pakistan were promoted to No.1 spot for the first time. India had already won the Test series 2-0 against the West Indies.
