France midfielder Dimitri Payet said the narrow 2-1 win against Romania would keep them grounded and make the team work harder in their bid to go far in the Euro football championship. The West Ham United player assisted Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud to put France on top and produced a brilliant left-footed effort himself as France won 2-1 in their Euro opener on Friday night.

"The crowd helped - we know how important the points were," Payet was quoted as saying by ESPN. "Now we're able to rest up and prepare for the second game. Had we won by two or three goals that might have misled us slightly. The fact we won like that shows there won't be any easy matches and we have to go out and win matches."

An 89th minute strike from French playmaker Dmitri Payet earned the host nation a stunning 2-1 win against a hard working and very well disciplined Romania side in the opening match of Euro 2016 in Paris on Friday night.

After a goal-less first half which saw French skipper Hugo Lloris produce an excellent early save and France spurn three-to-four good opportunities of their own, the hosts took the lead just before the hour mark through Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud, who made the most of some poor goalkeeping from Romanian stopper Ciprian Tatarusanu as he failed to gather Payet's speculative cross.

"It’s one of the first times where you don’t have a strong favourite, where it’s obvious. Apart from what you might say Spain because obviously they are the holders, but I don’t see a team that has been that dominant in Europe recently,” Henry was quoted as saying by the BBC.
