When Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team play Spain in the championship match of the Algarve Cup 2017, it will be the first time the two teams face each other in the history of women’s football. At a press conference the day prior to the match, both sides reflected on their journey to the Algarve Cup final and their excitement for the match ahead, but neither gave anything away.

The press conference, attended by John Herdman and Sophie Schmidt for Canada and Jorge Vilda and Verónica Boquete for Spain set the stage for the Algarve Cup final set for 18:30 local (13:30 ET/10:30 PT) 8 March at Estadio Algavre in Lagos, Portugal.

Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team will play Spain in the championship match of the Algarve Cup 2017 after a 0-0 draw against Portugal on 6 March 2017 secured Canada the top spot in Group A. The scoreless draw against home side Portugal was not without its action.  After a difficult first half, Canada found its rhythm in the second and forced Portugal into it’s end for much of the 45 minutes.

“It was a scrappy first half, but Canada found our gear in the second,” said Head Coach John Herdman. “We just had to figure out their diamond formation which was a little bit different for us and caused us a few problems at the start, but once we got our rhythm we had some great opportunities.”

Tennis star Rafael Nadal told Spanish bank Banco Sabadell's customers in this northwestern city that living in Spain did not make sense from a tax standpoint, but he was happy in his homeland.

"In terms of managing assets, perhaps it would be better to go to another country with more beneficial conditions, but Spain is where I'm happy, with my family and friends," he said.

With their backs against the wall, Roberto Bautista Agut and Pablo Carreno Busta held their nerves to complete a big turnaround on the final day of the Davis Cup tennis tie against Croatia in Osijek, leading Spain to the World Group quarter-finals for the first time in five years.

Bautista Agut had the task to get his team to the fifth, deciding rubber and he didn't let them down. After a hard-fought battle that lasted for three hours and 19 minutes, the world No. 16 beat the Croatian No. 1, 29-year-old Franko Skugor 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (6) on Sunday.

Feliciano Lopez on Monday joined the Spanish Davis Cup tennis team in Osijek, where he will play against Croatia, replacing Rafael Nadal.

Lopez joined the team after the head of medical services at the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation advised against Nadal's participation during his recovery after the Australian Open, reports Efe.

The Spanish team for the Davis Cup consists of Feliciano Lopez, Roberto Bautista, Pablo Carreño and Marc Lopez.


England interim manager Gareth Southgate asserted that he has made a strong claim to a permanent appointment with the national football squad following the draw with former World Cup champions Spain at the Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

England produced a strong performance against a second string Spain team and led for most of the match before the visitors scored two late goals to secure a 2-2 draw.

Isco and Iago Aspas salvaged a 2-2 draw for Spain against England in a highly anticipated international friendly that drew nearly 84,000 spectators to the Wembley Stadium in London. The late goals kept intact Spain's unbeaten streak that began when Julen Lopetegui succeeded Vicente del Bosque as Head Coach following La Roja's disappointing performance at Euro 2016.

The hosts were clearly the more motivated side on Tuesday, knowing the importance of the contest in boosting interim coach Gareth Southgate's chances of getting a permanent appointment.
