AB de Villiers announced his return to international cricket in the most emphatic, imperious and sublime manner possible with his 25th career ODI century and remarkably his first ever against Bangladesh in the second Momentum One-Day International at Eurolux Boland Park on Wednesday.

The fact that the Proteas won by 104 runs and clinched the series with a 2-0 series lead paled into significance against the backdrop of De Villiers brilliance.

Nineteen-year-old  Wiaan Mulder is still processing his unexpected call-up to the Proteas One-Day International (ODI) squad for the remaining two matches of the Momentum ODI series against Bangladesh. Mulder was withdrawn from the bizhub Highveld Lions’ Sunfoil Series match taking place in Potchefstroom last night, a whirlwind 24 hours that has resulted in the culmination of a dream come true.

“ It’s still a bit of a dream,” he said in Paarl on Tuesday. “ It hasn’t really sunk in, I only got here (Paarl) three hours ago, but it’s an absolute dream to spend time with guys like AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla. Bangladesh, who won the toss and opted to bat first, posted what might have seemed a respectable total of 278/7 but in reality it was well short of where they needed to be. The Proteas only needed 17 runs for victory going into the final 10 overs and with all their wickets still intact they would probably have gone on to make somewhere close to 400 if they had needed to do so.

Proteas have hit the reset button ahead of the first Momentum One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Sunday. Captain, Faf du Plessis, has warned against complacency following the 2-0 whitewash in the Sunfoil Test series, adding that the change in formats will be an opportunity for the visitors to regroup.

AB de Villiers and JP Duminy return to the international fold after a long break, and will bring a fresh injection of energy and hunger. The series is the start of an important summer of trial and assessment for the ODI squad, as plans for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup start to gain momentum.
