Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare rued poor decision-making by the referee after his team was defeated by Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Atletico eked out a 1-0 win at the Vicente Calderón Stadium here on Wednesday night thanks to a controversial penalty which was converted by striker Antoine Griezmann in the 28th minute.

A first-half penalty from Antoine Griezmann was enough to give Atletico Madrid a 1-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie at home to Leicester City.

The win was well-deserved as Atletico dominated possession and had most of the game in the visitors' half, but Leicester can rightly complain that the penalty should never have been given, as foul was clearly outside of the penalty area.

Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of the Spanish football league standings despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home by city rivals Atletico Madrid. Real dominated the Madrid derby on Saturday night but were denied victory by a late goal from Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann finished off a pass from Angel Correa to give Atletico a point they scarcely deserved in the 85th minute after a game in which Real Madrid had the majority of chances, but thanks to a series of fine saves from Atletico keeper, Jan Oblak, all they had to show was a headed goal from Pepe to reward their efforts.

Sevilla lost the chance to close the gap at the top of the La Liga football championship as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Leganes, while Antoine Griezmann scored late to give Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win over Granada.

The Saturday draw leaves Sevilla on two points behind Real Madrid with two more games played, and three behind Barcelona, who have played a game less.

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres, who was discharged from hospital a week ago after being knocked unconscious at the Estadio Riazor stadium during the football match against Deportivo La Coruña, said he is now fine and eager to join his teammates on the field soon.

In an interview posted on Atletico Madrid's official website on Thursday, Torres said: "Well, well. I am doing very well. It was a big fright for all, probably least for me because I don't remember of the moment of the blow until I recovered consciousness at hospital, but I understand the magnitude of what happened when I see the video in real time."
