Italy set up a quarter-final date with Germany at Euro 2016 after ousting the reigning European Champions Spain 2-0 in a last 16 clash in Paris.

The Azzurri, who were embarrassed 4-0 in the Final of Euro 2012 gained a small measure of revenge for that defeat by picking up a hard earned win in the penultimate game of the round.

A 33rd minute goal off the knee of Giorgio Chiellini after David de Gea had produced a couple of half-saves to deny Italy put the Azzurri in the drivers' seat, and their water tight defence proved too good for the Spanish midfield to break down, snuffing out chance after chance.

An 87th minute goal from Inter Milan forward Ivan Perisic wherein he beat Spain keeper David de Gea at his near post has given Croatia a stunning 2-1 win over the two-time defending European Champions, condemning Spain to a second place finish in Group D and setting up a last 16 showdown with Italy in what would be a repeat of the 2012 European Championship final.

Spain completely dominated the first half, passing the ball with ease around the Croatian midfielders and took an early lead through in-form hitman Alvaro Morata, who stabbed home Cesc Fabregas' cross from close range after some wonderful interplay between the Chelsea playmaker and his Manchester City counterpart David Silva.

14-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal and newly crowed French Open Champion Garbine Muguruza will lead the Spanish tennis team at the Olympic Games in Rio, according to the list sent by the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation RFET, based on both players' individual ATP and WTA rankings.

Apart from world No.4 Nadal and the new princess of women's tennis Muguruza, the list also includes David Ferrer, Roberto Bautista Agut, Albert Ramos and Carla Suarez, Efe reported on Thursday.

Defender Gerard Pique scored a late goal to give a dominant Spain side a 1-0 victory over Czech Republic in their Group D match of the European football championships in Toulouse on Monday.

Two-time defending champions, Spain, had ball possession up to 68 per cent, created 14 corners and fired 17 attempts on goal, but they failed to turn those numerous chances into goals as they ran into a determined backline superbly marshaled by Arsenal stopper Petr Cech.

Spain and Chelsea forward Pedro Rodriguez expressed confidence that the current controversy over the alleged involvement of Manchester United Goalkeeper David de Gea in a sexual assault case will not affect the decision of Head Coach Vicente del Bosque regarding his choice of keeper at the European Championships.

When asked about the effects of such allegations on the technical decision of the Spanish coach who may opt to replace De Gea with goalkeeper Iker Casillas, the Chelsea forward explained that he does not think this will affect any decision on De Gea's participation in the European tournament.
