After thrashing Werder Bremen 6-0 in the Bundesliga football season opener, reigning champions Bayern Munich's coach Carlo Ancelotti hailed the efforts of the players saying an early goal helped them to control the proceedings.

The visitors found themselves trailing 2-0 just 15 minutes into Friday's contest at the Allianz Arena after giving up goals to Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski on Friday.

Reigning German champions Bayern Munich demolished Werder Bremen 6-0 in the 2016-17 Bundesliga season opener in Munich on Friday night.

Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich eye a fifth straight Bundesliga title as the 2016-17 German Bundesliga season kicks off on Friday. Bayern will host Werder Bremen in their season opener under new coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"We're looking forward to the start of the season and we're ready for the first game against Bremen," Ancelotti said on Thursday.

Striker Robert Lewandowski's first-half hat-trick ensured Bayern Munich a 5-0 victory over fourth division side FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the first round of the German Cup.

The German Cup holders started their title defence with Lewandowski establishing a 3-0 lead within 43 minutes before Arturo Vidal and Mats Hummels rounded off the 5-0 scoreline.

German football champions Bayern Munich's French midfielder Kingsley Coman has suffered an ankle injury during Wednesday's training session.

The young French international looks set to miss the opening weeks of the new Bundesliga season as the club confirmed on Wednesday he will be out "until further notice".

Bayern Munich's Arturo Vidal and Thomas Muller were on target to beat wasteful hosts Borussia Dortmund 2-0 to lift the German Supercup football. Thomas Tuchel's Dortmund dominated the first half but were unable to make the most of their promising opportunities here on Sunday. Bayern turned up in the second half and opened the scoring through Vidal before Muller sealed the deal to wrap up just the fifth Supercup title in the club's history.

A sold out Signal-Iduna Park witnessed Dortmund take the game to Bayern right from the kick-off while the German Champions were unable to gain a foothold into the contest.

German sport journalists have voted international defender Jerome Boateng as their Player of the Year, following a poll by renowned sports magazine Kicker on Sunday.

The 27-year-old centre-back earned 163 votes from 674 votes counted becoming the second defender, after Juergen Kohler in 1997, to win the poll. Boateng follows former Wolfsburg player Kevin De Bruyne, who won the poll last year, reports Xinhua.
