Brazil football superstar Neymar labelled winning Rio Olympic gold as one of the "best things" of his life as he hit back at critics following Brazil's dramatic win over Germany in the final.

The forward scored from a free-kick as the match finished 1-1 in regulation time and sealed Brazil's first Olympic football gold with the winning penalty in a 5-4 shoot-out victory on Saturday.

Neymar converted the decisive spot-kick as Brazil ended their long wait for Olympic football glory with a dramatic 5-4 (1-1) penalty shoot-out victory over their 2014 World Cup tormentors Germany in Rio on Saturday. The Brazil captain held his nerve after the scores were tied 1-1 at the end of extra-time in a pulsating final at the Maracana stadium.

Nils Petersen was the only player to miss in the shoot-out, with Brazil goalkeeper Weverton punching away the German's feeble attempt.

Canada are back on the podium after a historic run at the Rio 2016 Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Canada won five of six matches to claim their second consecutive bronze medal, culminating their run with a 2:1 victory over host Brazil at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo.

On the final day, it was again Canada's blend of youth and experience that made the difference. Seventeen-year old Deanne Rose opened the scoring and captain Christine Sinclair scored the eventual winner, with one goal on either side of the break. Incidentally, both Sinclair and Rose also hit the woodwork in the victory.

Brazil's women's football team came away empty-handed from the Rio Olympics, losing 2-1 to Canada in the bronze-medal match in Sao Paulo on Friday. Deanne Rose, 17, opened the scoring for Canada in the 25th minute and then set up teammate Christine Sinclair for a goal at the 52-minute mark to make the score 2-0 at Arena Corinthians.

The North Americans' dominance was only interrupted at the 79-minute mark, when Brazilian striker Beatriz broke free of two defenders and got off a shot well out of the reach of goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Football Tournament bronze medal is on the line when Canada face host country Brazil on Friday, 19 August at 13:00 local (Noon ET/09:00 PT) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Canada will be heading into the match looking to make history and defend their London 2012 podium spot, while Brazil will be aiming to bring home a medal for their home crowd.

“Brazil will have a home crowd that will be willing them on all the way,” said Canada’s Head Coach John Herdman. “It will be a pretty hostile crowd for Canada, we know that, but we also know what kind of pressure they will be under having hosted a home FIFA Women's World Cup.”
