German central defender Jerome Boateng will return on Wednesday to the Bayern Munich's starting line-up in the Bundesliga football league match against Hertha Berlin here, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday.

Boateng, 28, player of the year last season in Germany, reappeared on Saturday in a 3-1 win against Ingolstadt when he played for seven minutes after two months out.

FC Bayern Munich made a successful start to their 2016/17 Champions League football campaign, outclassing FC Rostov 5-0, with midfielder Joshua Kimmich scoring a brace in the second-half at the Allianz Arena.

Robert Lewandowski on Tuesday evening netted from the spot before birthday boy Thomas Müller doubled the lead shortly before the interval. Kimmich nicked a third after the break before rounding off a brace on the hour mark. Substitute Juan Bernat made it five with the final whistle imminent as the Bavarians set a new record along the way - Tuesday's victory was their 13th consecutive win in a Champions League home match.

New Bayern Munich head coach Carlo Ancelotti feels the quality of Douglas Costa and Franck Ribery means they can play together in the Bavarian football giants' XI. Brazil winger Costa is back in contention having made his comeback from a thigh injury off the bench in Saturday's 2-0 Bundesliga victory at Schalke.

Costa is set to play a part in Bayern's Champions League group stage opener against Russian club FC Rostov on Tuesday and that could pose a problem with the 25-year-old occupying a similar role to club stalwart Ribery, who endured an injury-hit 2015-16 season.

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller is expecting an "intense" UEFA Champions League group stage clash against Russian football club FC Rostov in Munich on Tuesday. Rostov qualified for the Champions League for the first time this season, beating RSC Anderlecht in the third qualifying round before stunning AFC Ajax 5-2 on aggregate in the play-offs.

Unfortunately for their first ever trip to Germany, Rostov have drawn the five-time European champions, whose last Champions League win came in the 2012-13 season. Since then the Bavarian giants have not reached the final of Europe's premier club football competition, falling in the semi-finals consecutively in the last three seasons.

Late goals from Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich helped Bayern Munich overcome Schalke 2-0 in the opening match of the second round of the Bundesliga on Friday night.

Hosts Schalke staged a resilient performance until an injury to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar forced the hosts to rejig their formation and that allowed Bayern's defenders, who had been under a lot of pressure right through the game, to step forward, with Javi Martinez unleashing the pass of the match to put Lewandowski through on goal in the 80th minute.

Germany's Head Coach Joachim Loew has named goalkeeper Manuel Neuer as the new captain of the national football team, to succeed retired midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Loew explained on Thursday that it is "logical" to name Neuer as a successor to Schweinsteiger since the Bayern Munich goalkeeper has everything required to be a skipper.

Three of the biggest clubs on the continent - Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Barcelona - are embroiled in a tug of war for the signature of 19 year old Scottish winger Oliver Burke, who currently plies his trade at Nottingham Forest. Also reportedly keen on the player are North London giants Arsenal and Tottenham, and a team that is likely to give him the most playing time - Sunderland.

All three continental giants are reportedly ready to offer Forest in excess of £10 million for the youngster's services, with United hoping to beat the competition by loaning the youngster right back to the Championship club as they look to sweeten the deal.
