The Euro football championship semi-final between France and Germany drew the largest TV audience in France since 2006, according to statistics company Médiamétrie.

The TF1 channel that aired the match played in Marseille said in a statement that it had a total audience share of 68.8 per cent with 19.2 million viewers, and 22.2 million at its peak, reports Efe.

Germany's football team head coach Joachim Low said that too many things went wrong for his side during the defeat to France in the European Championship semi-final here.

Antoine Griezmann was the hero for the hosts, as he on Thursday scored twice to secure a 2-0 victory over the reigning world champions and set up final clash against Portugal on Sunday.

France head coach Didier Deschamps heaped praises on match-winner Antoine Griezmann, who scored a brilliant brace to power his team to a convincing 2-0 win over Germany in the semi-final and set up a final showdown against Portugal in the European football Championship.

Euro 2016's top goalscorer, Griezmann took his tally to six goals after France on Thursday, defeated world champions Germany at a major tournament for the first time since 1958.

A goal in either half from forward Antoine Griezmann sent hosts France through to the final of Euro 2016 courtesy of a hard earned 2-0 win over World Champions Germany, who played the prettier football but lacked a quality marksman who could provide a finishing touch to their fantastic approach play.

Germany, missing three regular starters due to injury, chose to deploy Thomas Muller to lead their line, dropping playmaker Mesut Ozil out onto the right wing and Julian Draxler onto the left. Bastian Schweinsteiger replaced Sami Khedira in the heart of midfield, while Emre Can dropped in alongside him for his first start of the tournament too.

France and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes that compatriot Paul Pogba has the quality to go on to become one of the best midfielders ever to have played the game.

The Juventus midfielder's performances at European Championship had come under scrutiny after France struggled in the early stages of the tournament, but he sparked into life during the team's impressive 5-2 quarter-final victory over Iceland, scoring the second goal with a towering header as the host nation set up a semi-final showdown against Germany.

Two goals within the space of 5 second half minutes from Atletico Madrid hitman Antoine Griezmann earned hosts France a place in the Quarter-finals of Euro 2016 after a bright start from the Republic of Ireland had given France a real scare.

Ireland striker Shane Long made the most of some contact from former Manchester United trainee Paul Pogba to earn his side a penalt, one which Robbie Brady smashed past Hugo Lloris via the inside of the post.

Dmitri PayetFrance and Switzerland played out a goal-less draw at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy as Group A concluded on a positive note for both teams, sending them through to the knockout rounds of Euro 2016. The point earned for France means that they finish the Group as table toppers and will face one of the third placed teams in Lyon on Sunday, while Switzerland finished in second place in the Group and will square off against the second place team in Group C, who as things presently stand is Poland, at Saint-Etienne on Saturday.

The other Group A game today saw minnows Albania score their first ever goal in a major championship, with that honour going to FC Zurich striker Armando Sadiku as the first time European Championship participants stunned Romania 1-0 to give themselves a decent chance of finishing as one of the best 4 third place teams in the competition.
