Star forward Lionel Messi has announced his return to Argentina's national team for their World Cup qualifiers in September, ending his short-lived retirement from international football.

A disappointed Messi had announced his international retirement after missing a penalty in the shootout defeat to Chile in the final of the Copa America Centenario in June. It was the third consecutive loss for Argentina in the final of a major tournament following defeats at the 2015 Copa America and the 2014 World Cup.

Poland maintained their all-win record in Pool B by defeating Argentina 25-21, 25-19, 37-35 in a men's volleyball match at the Rio Olympics on Thursday. Poland booked a berth in the top eight with three straight wins.

The Indian Men's hockey team reached the quarter-finals after a gap of 36 years at the ongoing Rio Olympics despite beaten 1-2 by the Netherlands for its second loss in four Pool B games. Rogier Hofman's 32nd minute goal on Thursday was cancelled out by Indian drag-flicker V.R. Raghunath in the 38th minute. Penalty corner specialist Mink van der Weerden scored the winner for the Dutchmen in the 54th minute.

Despite the loss, India made it to the quarter-finals as Argentina held Germany 4-4 later on Thursday. Lucas Vila (fourth minute), Pedro Ibarra (29th), Gonzalo Peillat (48th) and Matias Rey (57th) scored for Argentina while Timm Herzbruch (15th), Christopher Wesley (24th), Mats Grambusch (28th) and Mathias Muller (60th) replied for the Germans.

The new coach of the Argentine football team Edgardo Bauza met superstars Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano at their club FC Barcelona's training ground on Thursday, hoping to persuade the disgruntled duo to reconsider their international retirement.

Bauza was at the Camp Nou Stadium to watch Messi score twice and set up Luis Suarez for a goal in Barcelona's 3-2 win over Sampdoria in the Joan Gamper friendly game on Wednesday night, reports Xinhua.

Brazil's Olympic team's coach Rogerio Micale is confident captain Neymar will eventually become the world's best player, but warned the country's football fans to show more respect to him or risk losing him to retirement.

Neymar's FC Barcelona colleague Lionel Messi retired from international football in June after Argentina was beaten in the Copa America Centenario football tournament and after enduring a fractious relationship with fans and media in his Argentina for the best part of a decade.

Argentina began the Olympic men's rugby sevens competition here with a scrappy 17-14 victory over the US, who enjoyed a man advantage on two separate occasions during the match.

After beating Argentina 2-1 in a Pool B match of the Rio Olympics, Indian hockey captain P.R. Sreejesh on Tuesday said the team has learnt to handle big games from its previous mistakes.

Riding on Chinglensana (8th minute) and Kothajit Khadangbam's (35th) goals, India got its second win at the quadrennial games after winning the opener against Ireland 3-2 before going down to Germany 1-2 on Monday.
