Goals from Philippe Coutinho, Neymar and Marcelo fired Brazil to a 3-0 victory over Paraguay in their World Cup qualifier as the Selecao extended their winning run to eight matches. The result at Corinthians Arena here on Tuesday lifted Brazil to 33 points from 14 matches and all but guaranteed the five-time world champions a place at football's showpiece tournament in Russia next year.

Earlier, Argentina's shaky qualifying campaign continued when they stumbled to a 2-0 loss to Bolivia in La Paz. The defeat came just hours after Lionel Messi was given a four-match ban by the FIFA disciplinary committee for abusing a linesman in the Albiceleste's 1-0 victory over Chile last week.

Ronnie Moran, former Liverpool football club captain and coach, breathed his last at the age of 83 on Wednesday.

Moran played 379 times between 1952 and 1968 for Liverpool, scoring 17 goals, but arguably played a big role under head coach Bill Shankly.

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres, who was discharged from hospital a week ago after being knocked unconscious at the Estadio Riazor stadium during the football match against Deportivo La Coruña, said he is now fine and eager to join his teammates on the field soon.

In an interview posted on Atletico Madrid's official website on Thursday, Torres said: "Well, well. I am doing very well. It was a big fright for all, probably least for me because I don't remember of the moment of the blow until I recovered consciousness at hospital, but I understand the magnitude of what happened when I see the video in real time."

Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Xabi Alonso on Thursday announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season. The 35-year-old confirmed the news, which had been rumoured for the last two months, on social media.

"It wasn't an easy decision to make, but I believe it's the right time," Alonso, a former Liverpool player, was quoted as saying.

Liverpool put up a superlative first half display on Saturday to outshine Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield and dent the capital club's hopes of challenging for the Premier League title. Roberto Firmino (9th minute) and Sadio Mane (40th) gave the hosts a 2-0 lead before Danny Welbeck (57th) reduced Arsenal's deficit in the second half.

Moments after Arsenal sub Alexis Sanchez had an effort blocked at the other end, Liverpool broke with pace and Georginio Wijnaldum sealed the game in Liverpool's favour in injury time, sending the Reds up to third spot.

Brazil football team head coach Tite has recalled forward Diego Souza and midfielder Diego for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Paraguay later this month. Souza, who netted 31 goals for Brazil's Sport Recife last year, on Friday replaced injured Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus while former Atletico Madrid player Diego was rewarded for his outstanding form with Flamengo.

Both players impressed during Brazil's 1-0 victory over Colombia in an unofficial friendly in January to raise money for the Chapecoense air crash.
