Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has expressed his desire to be the captain of the German national football team under the command of coach Joachim Loew, after current skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger announced his international retirement last week.

While in New York with Bayern Munich's camp to prepare for the new season and before the Real Madrid friendly, Boateng told the Bild newspaper that he was ready to take up the responsibility anytime. He added that it is a great task to handle, but highlighted that the final decision is up to Loew.

Australia were much improved in their second practice match ahead of the Rio Olympics, running out 5-2 winners over arch-rivals Germany thanks to a double from Blake Govers and strikes from Jake Whetton, Eddie Ockenden and reserve athlete Jeremy Hayward.

The performance was a marked improvement on their 3-0 defeat to Argentina 24 hours earlier, played at a higher tempo with more energy and a customary Australia-Germany intensity.

Hosts Germany overcame Austria 3-0 by courtesy of two quick second-half goals at the last Group A game of under-19 European championship in Reutlingen.

After two straight defeats, Germany on Sunday grabbed a 3-0 victory, thanks to the second-half goals from Phil Neumann, Cedric Teubert and Goekhan Guel, reports Xinhua.

In practically a line-to-line dominating performance, the United States crushed the 2016 ITU Triathlon Mixed Relay World Champions in Hamburg for its first-ever World Championship Title.

While the US enjoyed a marginal lead that erased any fear of being caught on the final leg, there was a mad jostling for silver and bronze among three teams behind the Americans. For the second consecutive day, silver place would be determined by a sprint finish, with Australia again in the mix. Olympics-bound Ryan Bailie anchored the Australian team, scoring silver with a last ditch plunge over the finish line. In the three-way race for the podium, home nation of Germany took bronze by just edging out France for third, much to the delight of the crowd.

Spanish motorcycle road racer Marc Marquez eased to victory in Sunday's 2016 German MotoGP Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, extending his points lead as the riders head into the second half of the season.

Marquez (Repsol Honda RC213), completed the race in 47 minutes, 3.239 seconds, 9.857 seconds ahead of second place Briton, Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda), reports Efe.

Twins Lars and Sven Bender, and Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry have been named in Germany's final 18-man squad for next month's Olympic Games in Rio.

The 27-year-olds and Freiburg attacker Nils Petersen will be Germany's three players over the age of 23 in the quadrennial extravaganza. Sven, a defensive midfielder for Borussia Dortmund, has been capped seven times for Germany while Lars, also a midfielder, has made 19 international appearances.
