Chinese lifter Long Qingquan claimed his second Olympic gold medal, winning the men's 56 kg weightlifting event with a world record total lift of 307kg. The 25-year-old Long, the 2008 Olympic gold medallist, overcame a stiff challenge from defending champion Om Yun Chaol of North Korea.

Long hoisted 137kg in snatch and 170kg in jerk to go past the previous world best of 305kg set by Turkish legend Halil Mutlu 16 years ago in the Sydney 2000 Games.

The South African Women’s Olympic Team has been knocked out of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after suffering their second loss in the tournament. Banyana Banyana were defeated 2-0 by China on Saturday night (6 August) at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

In the first match they lost 1-0 to Sweden at the same venue on Wednesday, 4 August.

Virginia Thrasher from the US won the women's 10m air rifle with 208.0 points at the Rio Olympic Shooting Center on Saturday, claiming the very first gold medal at the 2016 Games.

Du Li and Yi Siling, both from China, took home the silver and bronze medals respectively. Du finished with one point behind Thrasher, while Yi ended the event with 185.4 points.

Head coach of the South African Women’s Olympic Team, Vera Pauw, has described their clash against China as a do or die affair. The two nations meet tonight (Saturday, 6 August) in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Both sides lost their opening clashes – South Africa went down 1-0 to Sweden while Brazil beat China 3-0 in the other encounter, which makes this fixture all the more important.
