Riding on a valiant century from Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka reached 268/8 in their second innings at close of play, building a lead of 139 runs over Bangladesh at the P. Sara Oval on Saturday.

Mustafizur Rahman (3/52) and Shakib Al Hasan (3/61) shared six wickets between them to run through the hosts' batting order and hand Bangladesh a rare shot at victory on the opponents' home turf in their 100th Test.

Sri Lanka openers Upul Tharanga and Dimuth Karunaratne whittled down the first innings deficit to 75 runs as the hosts reached 54/0 in their second essay at stumps against Bangladesh at the P. Sara Oval on Friday.

Bangladesh rode on veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan's brilliant 116 and vital contributions from Mosaddek Hossain (75), Mushfiqur Rahim (52), Soumyo Sarkar (61) to post a mammoth 467 in their first innings in reply to Sri Lanka's 338.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Wednesday proposed a triangular contest between India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for the Nidahas Trophy between March 15 and 30 next year to mark the island nation's 70th anniversary of independence.

According to SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala, the tournament will consist of seven matches in all with each team playing the others twice, before the top two progress to the final. However, it is not yet clear if the matches will be Twenty20 Internationals or One-day Internationals (ODI).

The first day of the second test match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the P.Saravanamuttu Stadium will be a historic event which will see the Bangladesh national team marking its 100th match in test history.

Sri Lanka Cricket plans to mark the occasion with a medal awarding ceremony which will be graced by the Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan Papon.

Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 259 runs in the first Test match at the Galle International Stadium on Saturday. Spinner Ragana Herath picked up 6 for 59 as Bangladesh were 197 all out in the chase of an improbable 457-run target to help the home side go 1-0 up in the two-match series.

Resuming on 67 for no loss and needing 390 more runs for victory on the final day, Bangladesh lost overnight batsman Soumya Sarkar to the second ball of the morning and couldn't recover after that. Soumya got a leading edge off the first ball from Asela Gunaratne. It landed safely. However, the next ball clipped the bails of his off stump to dismiss the left-hander on his overnight score of 53.

Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim was on Thursday relieved of his wicketkeeping role for the upcoming two-Test cricket rubber against Sri Lanka, but will continue to play in the side as a specialist batsman, team manager Khaled Mahmud confirmed.

Mushfiqur will now be replaced by the other specialist stumper Liton Das, who last played in the longest format in 2015, against India and South Africa.
