Top seed Serena Williams outplayed unseeded Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-3 in a potentially tricky first round encounter at the US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York on Tuesday.

Williams needed to be right on the money from the start given the quality of opposition she was up against, and she powered down 12 aces to demolish Makarova in 63 minutes.

Two-time defending champion Serena Williams has accepted a wild card into the 2016 Western & Southern Open. Williams, the WTA’s No. 1 player, will be the top seed for next week’s tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

“We are thrilled Serena is returning to defend her titles,” said tournament director Andre Silva. “She is a fan favorite wherever she goes, especially here in Cincinnati as the reigning champion.”

In a major upset in the women's tennis doubles at Rio Olympics, Czechs Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova defeated 2-time defending gold medalists Serena and Venus Williams of America 6-3, 6-4.

The surprise win on Sunday ends the US hegemony. The Williams sisters had won three gold medals together in London 2012, Beijing 2008 and Sydney 2000.

Nissan unveiled its ground-breaking BladeGlider prototype today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with Williams Advanced Engineering playing an important role in the car’s creation as Nissan’s technical partner.

First seen as a concept car at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan utilised Williams Advanced Engineering’s expertise in electric powertrains, aerodynamics and chassis dynamics to build two prototypes at the Williams factory in Grove, Oxfordshire. One will be on static display in Rio de Janeiro at the Olympic Park, while the second will be used in Rio for dynamic rides to select media and VIPs.

The ITF has announced the seeds for the Rio 2016 Olympic Tennis Event being held at the Olympic Tennis Centre in Barra Olympic Park on 6-14 August.

The draw for the event will take place at the Olympic Tennis Centre on Thursday 4 August at 11:00 local time (14:00 GMT). Sixty-four players are contesting the men’s and women’s singles, and 32 teams are contesting the men’s and women’s doubles.

On Sunday, Tennis Canada announced that Serena Williams is withdrawing from Rogers Cup. The world no.1 holds three Rogers Cup titles and reached the semifinals at the last two editions of the event.

"Due to inflammation in my shoulder, I unfortunately must withdraw from the Rogers Cup. I was looking forward to competing in Montreal and I look forward to returning soon," said Serena Williams.
