Tenth-seed Karolina Pliskova reached her first Grand Slam final in style, shocking top seed Serena Williams 6-2, 7-6(5) in the semi-finals of the US Open on Thursday night. The loss meant Serena will have to relinquish her top rank to German Angelique Kerber who reached the title round beating Dane Caroline Wozniacki in the other semi-final.

"It was always a dream to, you know, get a title, get to the semi-final, get to the final," said Pliskova in her post-match press conference on Thursday.

German Angelique Kerber will become the new women's singles World No.1 replacing long-standing incumbent American Serena Williams when updated rankings are released on Monday, September 12.

"Congratulations to Angelique on this remarkable accomplishment of becoming the WTA World No.1," said Women's Tennis Association (WTA) CEO Steve Simon.

Karolina Pliskova and new world no.1 Angelique Kerber will battle it out for the US Open title on Saturday after both women registered straight set wins in their respective semi-final encounters today.

10th seeded Czech tennis player Karolina Pliskova stunned 6-time US Open champion and top-seeded Serena Williams 6-2, 7-6, thus ending Williams' 186-week reign as world No 1 (stretching back to February 18, 2013) is now over.

World No.1 Serena Williams advanced to the semi-finals of the US Open, beating fifth seeded Romanian Simona Halep 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in an entertaining contest.

The number one seed, who is seeking her seventh US Open title, will face Czech Karolina Pliskova in the semifinal. Pliskova, seeded 10th, extended her unbeaten run to 10 matches, crushing Croatia's teenage sensation Ana Konjuh 6-2, 6-2.

In one of the best matches of the tournament so far, sixth-seed and crowd favourite Venus Williams lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the fourth round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York on Monday.

"I was prepared that I'm going to play Venus. It's going to be tough, because all the people are cheering for her," Xinhua news agency quoted Pliskova as saying.

World No.1 Serena Williams of the United States defeated Johanna Larsson of Sweden 6-2, 6-1 in the US Open third round at Flushing Meadows, New York on Saturday, thus moving one step closer to winning the women's singles title for the seventh time.

"It was a really good match for me because she played a different kind of match. It was really good for me to have a different type of rhythm and move the ball around," Xinhua news agency quoted Williams as saying of playing against Larsson.

Felipe Massa has announced that he will retire from Formula One at the end of the 2016 season, after 14 years at the top level of the sport. The 35-year-old Brazilian is in his third year with Williams, having joined the team in 2014, and is due to celebrate his 250th Grand Prix start at his final race in Abu Dhabi this year.

Felipe scored three podiums and one pole position on his way to seventh in the drivers’ standings in his first season with the team, helping Williams climb to third in the Constructors’ Championship.
