It took the Kolkata Knight Riders just about 4 hours to regain top spot in the Indian Premier League standings from the Gujarat Lions, but they did it the hard way with Umesh Yadav spanking Thisara Perera for 6 with 3 balls to spare to earn KKR a narrow 2 wicket win in an entertaining contest against the Rising Pune Supergiants, who suffered their fourth straight defeat of the season.

Having been put in to bat by KKR, Pune made a competitive 160-5 from their 20 overs with Ajinkya Rahane top scoring with 67 from 52 balls. Pune recovered from the early loss of Faf du Plessis, bowled by Bangladeshi tweaker Shakib Al Hasan for 4, as Rahane and Steve Smith (31) shared 56 run stand for the 2nd wicket.

A pair of 80s from AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli led the Royal Challengers Bangalore to their second win of the season in the IPL, beating MS Dhoni's Rising Pune Supergiants by 13 runs in a rare win for the side batting first this season.

With 14 of 15 games going the way of chasing sides so far this season, it was hardly any surprise to see the Rising Pune Supergiants insert the Royal Challengers Bangalore in to bat on winning the toss.

The Kings XI Punjab finally got their season up and running with more than a little help from their opponents the Rising Pune Supergiants, who surprisingly won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that has proved largely fatal right through the tournament thus far.

Pune made three changes to their side for this game with Thisara Perera, Irfan Pathan and Ankit Sharma replacing the trio of Mitchell Marsh, RP Singh and Rajat Bhatia. Pune look super solid on paper with a lot of batting up the order and plenty of options on the bowling front though. Meanwhile, the Kings XI Punjab, still chasing their first win, made just the one change, Kyle Abbott coming in for the terribly out of form Mitchell Johnson.

Another Aaron Finch half-century, and his 85-run opening partnership with Brendon McCullum, who chipped in with a 31-ball 49, helped the Gujarat Lions register their second win in Season 9 of the Indian Premier League, beating fellow newbies Rising Pune Supergiants by 7 wickets in yet another comfortable chase this season.

The Supergiants won the toss and elected to bat first as Rajkot played host to an IPL game for the first time this season. Pune got off to a good start with South African skipper Faf du Plessis leading the way with an excellent 69 from just 43 balls. His innings was etched with 5 boundaries and 4 sixes. Du Plessis got good support from Ajinkya Rahane (21) and Kevin Pietersen (37), though in hind sight both batsmen should ideally have made better use of good batting conditions and scored at a brisker pace.

The Rising Pune Supergiants, Indian skipper MS Dhoni's newest IPL franchise, kicked off Season 9 in the most stunning fashion, thrashing the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, by 9 wickets in a virtual no-contest at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Having won the toss and deciding to bat first, Mumbai were soon ruing their decision as early wickets from Ishant Sharma (2-36) and Mitchell Marsh (2-21) reduced the hosts to 30-4 well inside the powerplay. Sharma removed both Mumbai openers - Rohit Sharma for 7 and Lendl Simmons for 8 - while Marsh came on first change and dismissed the next two batsmen - Hardik Pandya and Jos Buttler for 9 and naught respectively.
