Real Madrid booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League after a controversial 4-2 win at home against Bayern Munich in the return leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie to see them qualify 6-3 on aggregate.

Defending a 2-1 lead from the first half, Madrid were taken into extra time by the German club, who had midfielder Arturo Vidal unjustly sent off in the closing minutes of normal time, while Madrid's midfielder Casemiro could have seen his second yellow card of the night on two separate occasions, only to be pardoned by the referee both times.

German football champions Bayern Munich face a serious discussion about the quality of their squad after their 1-2 defeat against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

In the clash with the reigning champions, it was obvious that Bayern could not afford to replace key players like Robert Lewandowski who was sidelined with a shoulder injury. And the failure to have strengthened the squad could now turn out to be a mistake as Bayern may well be eliminated after the second leg in the Spanish capital.

Playing just a day after their team bus was attacked outside the team hotel, it was not easy for Borussia Dortmund's players, Monaco striker Radamel Falcao said.

Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare rued poor decision-making by the referee after his team was defeated by Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Atletico eked out a 1-0 win at the Vicente Calderón Stadium here on Wednesday night thanks to a controversial penalty which was converted by striker Antoine Griezmann in the 28th minute.

Real Madrid snatched a 2-1 comeback win after Christiano Ronaldo scored twice to beat 10-man Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final. Bayern were unable to defend their opener as Real turned up in the second half with two goals from Ronaldo on Wednesday evening. The visitors from Madrid ensured the first promising chance of the game when Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to tip Karim Benzema's header on to the bar with 18 minutes played.

Nevertheless, the opening goal of the match was scored at the other end of the pitch as Arturo Vidal headed home a corner kick from Thiago Alcantara to break the deadlock seven minutes later. Bayern should have doubled the lead before the break but Arturo Vidal was unable to convert a penalty in the dying minutes of the first half.

Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels will miss the UEFA Champions League encounter against Real Madrid. The 28-year-old defender had to leave Bayern's training session on Sunday after suffering an ankle injury.

Hummels sustained a distortion of the right upper ankle and also an injury of the capsule apparatus, the club said in a statement on Sunday.

Brazilian FC Barcelona forward Neymar might miss the El Clásico against Real Madrid as he mocked the fourth official following his red card verdict in a 0-2 loss to Malaga in the La Liga on Saturday.

Referee Jesús Gil Manzano, who booked Neymar for the second time in the match for a rash tackle on Diego Llorente to leave Barcelona down to 10 men for the final 25 minutes, included Neymar's barb while walking off into the tunnel in his post-match report, according to the Guardian.
