Former England players Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, legends of Chelsea and Liverpool, will be inducted in the National Football Museum Hall of Fame in September, the museum announced on Thursday.

Several United Kingdom football legends will also be introduced, including late Wales manager Gary Speed, West Ham legend Billy Bonds, Arsenal long-time goalkeeper Bob Wilson, and historic Manchester United player Charlie Roberts.

Liverpool defeated West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in an away match thus retaking third place at the expense of Manchester City in an English Premier League game at the Hawthorns on Sunday.

The match's only goal was scored by Brazil's Firmino for the Reds as he headed the ball into the back of the net a minute into the first half's stoppage time.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp on Thursday said club legend Steven Gerrard will likely take charge of an Academy team at Liverpool next season. Gerrard took on a coaching role at the Reds' youth division earlier this year, and has since worked on developing the potential of the club's youngsters.

In a press conference held on Thursday, Jurgen Klopp was asked whether Gerrard will continue this new chapter of his career by assuming control of an Academy team himself, to which he answered "There is not a real announcement in this moment, but what I can probably say is yes."

Liverpool on Wednesday officially launched its bid to host the Commonwealth Games, one of the world's biggest sporting events. Mayor Joe Anderson wants to bring the multi-sport event to the northern England port city in 2026. But he said Liverpool could host the games four years earlier in 2022 following the decision by announced host city Durban to withdraw.

Italian striker Mario Balotelli scored twice to keep Nice alive in the race for the Ligue 1 title with a 2-1 win at Lille. Having played two more games, Nice went past defending champions Paris Saint-Germain into the second position of the French football league, just one point adrift of leaders Monaco.

Lille went up on Ibrahim Amadou's deflected shot in the 14th minute on Friday, before Balotelli nailed his first goal away from home and finished a brace before the interval.

Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp on Friday said that forward Sadio Mane will miss the rest of the English football season as the Senegal star will undergo surgery on his injured left knee. The 24-year-old, who has scored 13 goals in 29 appearances this term, sustained the injury during the second half of Saturday's Merseyside derby victory over Everton.

"Sadio will, we're pretty sure, need surgery. We're not 100 per cent sure when it will happen, but then it is clear his season is over," Klopp said, according to Liverpool FC's website.

Eden Hazard's brace powered Chelsea to a 2-1 victory against Manchester City as the London club maintained a seven-point advantage over Tottenham Hotspur in the race for the English Premier League (EPL) title.

Chelsea on Wednesday bounced back with a vengeance after faltering 1-2 last weekend at home to Crystal Palace, while City were coming off a 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
