China pocketed a gold medal each in table tennis and taekwondo while the United States still tops the medals table at the Rio Olympics after Day 12. China defeated Japan 3-1 in the men's team final on Wednesday for a clean sweep of Olympic titles in table tennis competition for the third straight time. It was the 28th gold medal won by China in table tennis since the sport was introduced at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

World No. 1 Ma Long, who emerged the fifth man to complete a Grand Slam after being crowned the singles champion in Rio, scored two points in Wednesday evening's final. The 28-year-old started strong as the first positioned singles player, overcoming a mid-way blast and some netballs from the 22nd-ranked Koki Niwa, just 21 years old, to win in straight sets, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6.

China claimed two more gold medals in diving and table tennis to be placed third on the medals table of the Rio Olympics.


Chinese female paddlers defended the team gold after easily rounding up the final against Germany in straight three games on Tuesday. It was the 27th Olympic gold medal won by China in table tennis since the sport was introduced at the 1988 Seoul Games.

Their opponents, the unexpected finalists who outlasted the 2012 London Olympic runners-up Japan in full five games Monday in the semis, should be satisfied after settling for a silver, a first ever Olympic medal in history for Germany's women paddlers.

India's shuttler Kidambi Srikanth will face an enormous task of beating two-time Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion Lin Dan of China in the quarter-finals of the men's singles event at the Rio Olympics here on Wednesday.

Table tennis powerhouses China have been ready to repeat the gold medal sweeping in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, just as they did in Beijing and London, after both men's and women's teams reached the finals.

With Grand Slam winners Zhang Jike and Ma Long playing the opening two singles, the Chinese men's team beat last edition's silver medalists South Korea in three straight games on Monday, reports Xinhua.

Chinese netizens have criticised the red-and-yellow Olympic uniforms worn by their players, saying they resembled scrambled eggs with tomatoes, the China Daily reported on Saturday.

"I think the dress is utterly ugly. The opening ceremony should be one of the best occasions to display China's soft power and creative fashions but dressed in the uniform our sportsmen look like cheap restaurant waiters and waitresses," wrote Chen Cheng, a netizen from Beijing.
