Playing at Wembley Stadium is no excuse for English football club Tottenham Hotspur's "embarrassing" Champions League loss to Bayer Leverkusen, manager Mauricio Pochettino has said. Spurs lost 0-1 on Wednesday and have now lost both of their European games at the national stadium this season.

Spurs are playing their home Champions League games at the Wembley Stadium instead of their home ground, White Hart Lane, which is being redeveloped.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere did his bit for Bournemouth today, holding Tottenham to a 0-0 draw at the Vitality Stadium in the early kick-off on Saturday.

Wilshere got his first 90 minutes of the season under his belt and was solid in midfield, limiting Spurs to negligible chances, that prevented the Gunners' North London rivals from going top of the league standings.

Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino said it is too early to talk about his side's chances to win the English Premier League (EPL) this football season.

The Argentine coach, in an interview with the BBC on Wednesday, expressed his confidence in the Spurs' project, noting that his team is on the right track, but needs time.

Tottenham Hotspur picked up a hard earned 2-0 win at White Hart Lane to halt the runaway train that has been Manchester City this season, bringing an end to the Citizens' perfect start to the season, whilst still maintaining their own unbeaten run.

An own goal from Aleksandar Kolarov inside the opening 10 minutes, and a silky finish from Dele Alli after being setup by the in-form Son Heung-min 8 minutes before the interval powered Tottenham back up to second place in the Premier League standings, and crucially to within a point of City, who had won all 6 of their domestic games this season coming into this match.

Reigning champions Real Madrid conceded a late equaliser against Germany's Borussia Dortmund, while England's Tottenham Hotspur and Italian champions Juventus bounced back from their poor opening day performances to post away wins on Matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League .

Elsewhere, Leicester City stunned Porto 1-0 to maintain a perfect record in their Champions League debut here on Tuesday.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli on Monday signed a new six-year contract that will keep him at the English football club till 2022. He joined Tottenham from MK Dons in February 2015 and went on to score 10 goals to help Tottenham to a highest-ever third place finish in the 2015-16 English Premier League.

The 20-year-old was then selected for the summer's European Championship and started three of the four matches in France.

Two goals in the opening 31 minutes laid the foundation for French football side AS Monaco to beat England's Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in a Champions League match at the Wembley stadium.

Tottenham began purposefully but were rocked when Bernardo Silva hammered in a drive off the far upright corner of the net from a Monaco counter-attack in the 15th-minute on Wednesday. Thomas Lemar, a seventh-minute substitute for Nabil Dirar, then doubled the lead after Djibril Sidibe's cross fell on his path.
